New upland game hunter ?'s

Postby MTbowhunter » Wed Oct 09, 2013 3:37 pm

My wife and I just moved to Bozeman, earlier bow hunting seasons means I can finally hunt more upland game & get into waterfowl hunting. Only done a little duck hunting, few friends I've met here have invited me to go out with them n hunt some ducks & geese. I have a Rem 870 Express Magnum that I've used from deer to skeet and pheasants/quail. I like that gun, just plain and its a pump. I'm wanting a semi-auto for waterfowl & preferably a fancy o/u for upland. Looking @ the Benelli Montefeltro and Vinci, however those r quite pricy. Are there any guns that are comparable just not quite as expensive as the Benelli's?

FWIW that 870 will be all you ever need for waterfowl. That's all I use and it performs flawlessly for me.
No idea on O/Us.

For the o/u you need a ruger red label.

I do like my 870, I'm just ready for an upgrade. I shoot a fair bit of trap as well. I got to shoot a Vinci my friend owned and it was a really nice shooting gun. Pointed really well, felt like an extension of my arm.

Don't get rid of the 870, you'll need a good tire chok when parking in the foothills.

My dad gave me that gun, I've never had a single malfunction with it, from turkey loads down to #8's. Like I said its not a bad gun and has served me well, I just am looking for something a little different

Weak.

The ugly A5 is my favorite looking gun of semi's though...I hope the SX3 is the one, as it's the "cheapest" of the "good" semi's

Its basically a heavy, uglier Maxus. Same drive system I think. Not positive though, but they are made by the exact same company.

Maybe the maxus is just an ugly SX3. :D

Every Mossberg I have seen just felt cheap, maybe that's just me but too much plastic for my liking. I know you get what you pay for, probably should just save up for the Vinci for waterfowl, n then in a year or two spring for the Montefeltro for upland. Anybody have experience with the Franchise Affinity?

For the auto, Remington Versa Max. Bought one last year because I wanted an auto and this way I have two duck guns for when my brother comes into town. I love that versa max. It's tough in a duck marsh and shoots every load I put through it, although I agree with the other guys that it's hard to beat an 870.
I bought a used Browning Citori in 20 gauge a couple years ago for $850 with not a scratch on it. It was the white lightning version which is pretty as hell, light to carry for upland and handles beautifully. If you look around, there are always used citoris to be had for under $1000, or a little more if you want a nicer model. They are reliable, parts and choke tubes are everywhere, and they just feel good to shoot.
Those are my choices, in my humble opinion anyway :D

Not a bad choice. I'd recommend a Beretta a400 and a silver pigeon.

I had a friend who bought one of them as a first gun when he decided he wanted to shoot clays and learn about duck hunting. So all summer I watched this thing jam repeatedly while shooting clays. Got so bad he started carrying a small can of rem oil in his vest. Then duck season comes and second weekend of the season he jams up again because all that oil he sprayed in the action gummed up the gas block. Couldn't get it fixed in the field so he takes it to the fine gunsmiths at Gander Mountain who told him there were several broken parts that needed to be replaced. I finally convinced him to get rid of that thing and buy a better gun. I'm partial to Remingtons, so I pointed him at the versa max and the Beretta A400. Think he went with the Beretta, but the moral is, especially with auto loaders and O/U, you get what you pay for.
