870 Choke tubes

Postby TwistedX1 » Sat Oct 26, 2013 10:48 am

I am new to water fowling, in fact, I have only gone twice and had to borrow gear to go then. I have since acquired a rem. 870 express super mag and was curious what choke tubes you would recommend. I'm a fan of a tight pattern. I shoot doves with a super full choke and do just fine. I was hoping you guys could point me towards a couple of tube and shell/shot combos that have worked for you in the past.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer.

There's several 870 fuys on here that should be able to point you in the right direction.

Carlsons seem to make most happy across the spectrum of scatter guns. I do like mine. As for loads I'm no help there with the 870

A Kicks High Flyer is my choke of choice. It works well with different brands and shot sizes. I have one for both my 870 and SX2.

pattern you gun .try a number of load,s each gun will shoot something better .ask some of the guy,s you hunt around for a few shells to try find what works best. you might find factory tubes are the ticket . in one of my A5 browning a mod factory is gold put it in one of my other A5,s sucks . i know how it is to spend money just to find out you had what needed all along

good idea.

Twisted...with your permission I'll talk to Olly about changing the title to choke tubes for an 870. Might catch the attention of those guys

I've shot Xpert #2 out of the factory Rem Mod choke, and have plans of changing. I've tried many shells, but those pattern the best for me. I can think of a bazillion other things to spend $40 on other than a fancy choke.

Get a Benelli, you will like it better than the 870. How far away are the birds going to be when you shoot them? Decoying ducks, use Improved Cyl. Pass shooting use Modified. If you can find an extended choke that is vented, these seem to make more noise and piss your hunting buddies off so I usually go with something like that.

Carlsons mid range. Gives me a good patten from 25-55 yards.

If you're willing to drop $40 for a Carlston Choke Tube, add $15 dollars to that and you can have Stu Wright make you a custom choke tube to your 870. All you have to do is take that barrel to your local gunsmith, have him measure the bore with a bore gauge and give you the dimensions and send that to Stu as well as the load you'll be using most of the time. He'll make you one wicked choke that will have the most uniform pattern known to man.

I have several 870's. The one that I killed the most ducks with has no choke system but came with two barrels. One day I blew up the mod...snowy day, crawled after a duck, stood up, shot, and it banana'd on me.
My % went WAY up when I put the IC barrel on?
Pattern your gun with factory chokes before you buy anything.
Dead serious.

I can never make my mind up on choke tubes but I'm pretty sure boot never ever takes his factory mod out of his and he does pretty good

My factory mod has been in since day 1. Not sure if I could even get it out if I wanted to.
