I don't understand why people use 5s and 6s on Pheasants and grouse!?!? A handicap trap load of 1 1/8oz of 7.5s going @ 1200-1290 fps kill upland birds fast and have a much better pattern than what 4s, 5s, and 6s will throw. So instead of wasting your money spending $15-$25 for a box, buy some trap loads as try them. Here's a few to consider:

Winchester AA SuperHandicap going @ 1290 FPS
Remington Nitro-27 going @ 1250 FPS
Federal Gold Medal going @ 1230 FPS
Federal Gold Medal Papers going @ 1200 FPS

Most of these you can get for under $9 at your local big store.

How many wild roosters have you killed? I've shot my far share over the years. "Wild" not pen raised Crippled pheasants are a pain in the ass even with an excellent dog . I like to hit them hard and kill them dead. I shoot copper platted 5's or 4's. I just don't think 7.5 carries the energy needed past a certain point. I shot alot of hand loads for quail and doves and a few pheasants when thats all I have on me. In 7.5 and 8's. My cousin makes up a few cases every summer.

How economical is it for you cousin to load just 3 cases a summer? I've killed well over 75. I never said I hunted with a 35" barreled gun, that's what I patterned with. My hunting guns , mostly 870s, have 28"-30" barrel on them, and all of them are full choked except the 26" one I have; That's a fixed Mod off of a Wingmaster.

A whole 75? wow killer slow your roll. You're really putting up some serious numbers. When I was a kid I would hunt wild birds hard with my dad and cousin for a couple months. Then we would hunt pen birds 2 days a week for the following three months. we've done that for years. I really don't care what numerical mumbo jumbo you throw at me. Real experience trumps that bullshit. And when the fuck did I mention barrel length?

Wonder if they'd still go pop? I had a handful of old Winchester Papers High Brass that are back from the 60s-70s. Only 2 out of something like 10-11 fired. The two that fired though had a nice smell to them.
