It says that 2's are a goose load on the box when you buy Hevi Metal.

If its lead and it says 2s on the box, that's a goose load.

What kind of dumbass comment is that? Do you know what Hevi Metal is?

He apparently is still in 1977.

Nope, nothing wrong with shooting it if you don;t get caught out on the water.

Okay, thanks for your blessing man! Could you give me a card or something that I can give to the DEC officer when I begin to get a ticket?

7.5's out of a mod choke cripple more birds outside of 25 yards than almost any other load. With the exception of planted birds there is rarely a shot in the field inside 20 yards. Clay pigeons are counted as a hit with a single pellet strike. Do the same to a pheasant and you drop a leg and feed the coyotes because you will rarely find a crippled bird in good crp. 1 3/8oz #5 @1300fps for me please.

The problem might be that 25 yards, through a mod choke, you have a pattern about the size of a medium watermelon from a 35" barrel. Not a big pattern, so the possibility that the pheasant might not be hit squarely could have caused those cripples.

Postby NuffDaddy » Thu Dec 19, 2013 8:43 pm

Ok. So your saying you shoot 1 1/8 of 7.5s...thats about 380 pellets. Your saying at 25 yards your pattern is the size of a watermelon, which is about the size of a pheasant in flight. So with a centered shot there can't be much left to eat. And down range at the 40 yard mark where the density opens up a little I doubt there would be enough punch left to get through a pheasant with 7.5s.
Now with 5s you will have 190pellets in an 1 1/8 load. That's half the pellets so at close range you won't end up with a puff ball of feathers. And down range you could still reach out and touch them.
With that said, whatever works for you is what you should use. I use 5s for peasant and 7.5s or 6s for grouse.

Well said Nuff. I have shot a bunch of phez with 7.5s, I also tore up a lot of birds, and picked a lot of pellets out while eating. I like the biggest pellet that still gives good pattern density at 40 yds, for me it's 1 1/8oz #5.

I usually use a 1 1/4 but I like an open choke so I don't miss. At $20+/bird I don't want to watch them fly away.
I've got a plan for a grouse load for next early season. Most if my shots are at where I think the bird is, but cover is too thick to see it. So I'm going with a 3" 1 1/2oz of 7.5s through a cylinder choke. Throw a pattern the size of a semi at em. :-D
