...I was talking with an old boy from Butte last today.Some how conversation go into duck hunting with lead. He was telling me how he used #4 buck shot and could kill the shit out of geese from a long ways away. He also said that you were never allowed to use buck shot for waterfowl hunting because "it flew to far". Pretty interesting to say the least, and I do believe it could do really well on geese. I have shot some buck through a few full chokes and they all through wick patterns within a foot. Pretty interesting what people used to kill geese with.

#4 buckshot was legal in Illinois during the lead era and popular on the "firing lines" outside their refuges. (A firing line being spots, usually hay bale revetments, farmers rented to hunters wanting to pass shoot geese leaving the refuge.) In one study on its effectiveness there, 30-some observers were placed with buckshot shooters for two days, ie: 60-some "hunter efforts". I've long forgotten how many geese were killed and how many were only crippled, but what stuck with me was that the hunters were asked to call their shots, and none of them hit the bird they were shooting at.

It's my understanding that steel F shot. which was just a c-hair smaller than #4 buck, was later banned as a result of that study, but I don't know that for fact.

I met jehler and junior, shook their hands and they bought me lunch.
Junior impressed me by being so quiet, didn't say much but I could tell he was listening to everything said. He is a class act, and a good kid. Its obvious and it shows.
I bet he can skin a muskrat out in 90 seconds.
