Thinking of purchasing this gun and wanted some pro and cons on it first as to its performance on ducks it comes with interchangeable 24 and 28 barrels

Not a Mossberg fan but it really doesn't matter what length the barrel is for waterfowl. Just remember that a shotgun is still a shotgun. You can kill ducks with 20,000 Perazzi side by sides or with a cheap Mossberg, they are still going to be dead no matter how fancy. If it were me, I would go with a 28" barrel as that what would fit me the best for my height and build. Hope this helps.

A lot of guys start out with the mossbergs. Some will bash them, but bottom line is they are tough guns. Not the most agile and prettiest, but they are definitely the workhorse of the waterfowl world. I used one for years, killed birds, still have it but upgraded.

My first 2 shotguns were Mossbergs, killed birds just fine, and they're still in the back of the gun safe for sentimental reasons.

Even though it will shoot the same shell as higher priced ( prettier guns ) with longer or shorter barrels , it comes down
to if you can shoot straight with it ? Spend some time getting to know it at the range and it might be the Best gun you
ever had !

Patterning your load of choice and adjusting it to fit you .........comes first !

There are a mess of Louisiana duck and goose guides shooting 835s, but do your buddies a big favor and save that 24" barrel for the turkey woods. Ported barrels are miserable enough on blind mates' ears, but short ones are the very devil.

Truth be told, I'd sooner sell you an 835 instead of an 870 anymore. At least Mossberg knows they're cheap, Remington is still trying to convince themselves they are still high quality.

Pros, the 835 is overbored to 10 gauge dimensions. Gives you the ability to pattern large shot much better than just about any other 12 gauge.

I have 3 mossbergs, I wouldn't trade them or sell them. They pattern damn good. Only flaw is they're on the heavy side. But you can treat them like hell, and they'll always go bang.

All that I recall have been, but the company site says "most" 835 barrels are.

All that I recall have been, but the company site says "most" 835 barrels are.

My 835 28" is ported, my 935 28" is not though. The porting wasn't necessary IMO.

No. Barrel isn't overbored and attaches differently (I believe, will verify) so it won't accept a magazine extension.

Typically the overbored barrel patterns large shot much better. So if you plan on shooting BBB at geese, you can get 10 gauge like performance out of your 12. Smaller shot isn't as drastically affected, although some claim they do pattern better. Also, the larger bore tends to have softer recoil (less pressure).

The magazine extension is only an issue if you plan on doing conservation order snow goose hunting. And believe me, you are going to want it then!

My 835 has 20,000+ rounds through it, few repairs along the way. What I found with the overbored barrel is it tends to pattern everything good, from steel shot to turkey loads, not picky about finding the right load.

Very true. I have an early production Express that has been great to me but I couldn't get myself to buy a new one. I've never been a big Mossberg fan but they do work well and you'll probably never have one lock up on an empty hull like the 870 Express is so famous for.

Do you know why Remingtons are notorious for locking up on empty hulls?

Because one Express cost cutter was poorly milled chambers. Even after a smith honed mine as much as he dared, I can still feel the milling grooves in it, and they still collect enough burnt powder and plastic to seize hulls much sooner than I'm inclined to clean the chamber. Pisses me off. But I have also seen new out of the box 20ga Express guns with such bad milling that negative angles grabbed the expanded brass of the first shells fired in them. Both were boys' first guns, which really sucked.

yep. Them Mossy's have a little bit more steel around the barrel. Makes it easier to hone out those imperfections.
