I thought there was a non-toxic shot out there for older barrels that say "no steel" which won't gouge them, but my buddy and I couldn't recall what it is. We were talking about doing an old timey style hunt and I figured I could use my dads 16ga but I'd have to figure out what that shot was. Anyone recall what it is, or am I dreaming?

I'm a fan of Kent's Tungsten Matrix, which is pre steel shot barrel safe - but expensive.

http://www.ballisticproducts.com/Kent-T ... 62UGNT305/have used Matrix in 20ga with great results - wouldn't think twice about recommending it

I can think of Hevi shot's classic doubles too. Never used it but it's supposed to be for old guns.

I thought tungsten was harder then steel so would gouge/scratch the barrel just the same?

Pretty sure the matrix is an alloy of some kind or a compressed powder mixed with something making it soft.

Matrix is tungsten powder and a polymer "binder"...ends up with a pellet that performs very similarly to lead

Try checking Rio Ammunition, they do have Bismuth at a reasonable price. I have used their trap and skeet loads to great success, clean burning, and really good patterns.
