2 3/4" black cloud reviews

Postby Ericdc » Tue Sep 01, 2015 9:28 am

Thinking about getting a case of these in the 1 oz #3 loading at 1500 FPS. Thinking they will be a more than adequate decoying bird load for the rice field and marsh. Only considering because the rebate puts them comparable to regular steel loads.

Shot about a case and a half of 3" 3 black clouds a few years ago that were a gift and performed very well but seemed to be overkill inside 20 yards.

Thoughts?

Inside 20 anything will be deadly as long as you are.

I think the decision is ultimately up to your gun. You and put anything in it and it'll go boom.. the question is what does your pattern look like. Personally I get the best pattern with Kent Faststeel #2's for decoying ducks...but again it's all up to your gun/choke and how is patterns. Don't buy it for the hype or the pretty box buy it for the 30 yard group..

Agreed, I just don't like smaller pellets than 3's generally.

Everything I've tried has patterned well in my browning gold terror .700 choke combo so far.

2 3/4" black cloud reviews

I've never had a prob with 2 3/4" shells with decoying birds. Only time I cussed up and down was when I went after geese with them. One of the people I hunt with shoots bc religiously, I just get whatever is cheapest.

Sounds like a decent setup/deal for what you're doing. I'd figure the majority can't really discern between the ability of a 2 3/4" shell and a 3" shell of same shot size and speed. That said, for rice hunting you might be a lil undergunned for geese not at gimme range. Also, I know they make choke tubes for black cloud, but no idea if they really optimize the pattern beyond what your usual choke might throw. Just be sure you're not using one of the few chokes that are specifically NOT for black cloud use.

Right, I shoot a terror .700 choke which is a light mod basically. I bring 3" 1's for the geese.

The terror chokes are construction chokes, not wad stripping which don't work well with BC.

The only other thing I know about Black Cloud is that when I find them inside birds they're far from "razor sharp" edged, more like just a little ridge around the pellet. I shoot them if price is right or given to me, but don't go out of my way to find them.

good luck out there!

I'd spend the money on a pattern master choke tube and use cheaper ammo.
That choke shortens the shot string a lot. This means when you hit the target it's getting nearly all the pellets rather than a fraction. The guys I know that use those chokes flat out murder anything they shoot. They can afford black cloud AND the fancy chokes.

So about 6 years ago I bought my first terror .700. There seems to be a learning curve, especially on true decoying birds, really concentrate on the head, but it really made a difference regardless of ammo and shot size as far as better pattern density, especially at the core.

So I then got brave and bought the .675,really is nice on marginal birds,or low percentage going away,or bad angle shots. Once again,at least in my browning and SX3,I am confident in most any ammo I put through it

Patternmaster is also a good product, however, one must watch black cloud through the ported version because the leaflets on the flight control wad will hang

Thought the same thing until I put one in my Beretta. Was a Briley and ohmagerd...whoooo.

Yep terrors excel with steel. I've patterned my 700 with 1's and 3's. Both make a great pattern at 40 yards, which maybe some days is my 3rd shot??

I use nothing but #2 winchester welding slag and have pulled off some amazing stunts with it. 100-yard snows for instance.

Yea. I don't try stunts, especially on passing geese. Just don't like crippling them, or burning shells on a snow goose. It's your money though ha.

Because you're just better than me. I bet you even count your ducks and know what species they are.
Whenever I say, "watch this" it's always a show followed by ppl saying "ho lee fuch". "how far did you lead that bird?"
Brileys extreme range.

How can you verify 100 yards? Was it a ground swat?

There were balloons set at 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, and 200 yards UP so we could range in on em. Don't all snow goose hunters do this?

johnc wrote:No way I can begin to imagine consistently hitting beyond 50 yards, even though the choke and load may be effective beyond that

The likelihood of NOT having to chase birds at that distance is low--- and I AM THE DOG---so I would rather not spend the hunt chasing cripples all over and miss the prime time window to get something decoying

We may try a marginal shot every now and then, only to say, yep, too far and carry on trying to get the birds closer

But if a man can consistently harvest at 50 and beyond, more power to him

The snow...was shot straight up and landed about 20 yards from the blind stone dead. Plus I have a dog.
I'm sorry for dogging you man. Was having a little fun. Forgive me plz.
