Nothing today. It took an act of Congress to get me out checking them, because I feel terrible, but I'm 99% that I lost a coyote. Why, you ask?

-For the last two days, I had what I thought was a fox coming into a dirt hole set from the back, and raking the backer away to peek down the hole from the "wrong" side. Foxes dig a lot, but this was weird. Even if they come in from the back, they usually don't tear up the set like that. So I added a blind set to the back, about 6 inches behind the backer.

-When I got to the set this morning, it was tore up. There was a circle, but I couldn't see any whole prints, just pads. And the fucking trap and stake were gone.

-Maybe it was a deer? Nope, for three reasons. Deer just pull out, because a 1 3/4 barely reaches past the hoof, and would never reach over the ankle, a deer would not have made a circle like that, and there were no hoof prints in the dirt.

-Maybe it was a dog? Although this isn't scientific, I say no, because I've NEVER had a dog run away. They just sit there or lay there and wait for somebody to come get them.

-Maybe it was a fox? Maybe, but I doubt it (that's the 1% leftover in the original statement). Foxes try to lunge away very low to the ground, almost flat. Pulling out a 20" long, 1/2" rebar stake would be damn near impossible to do that way. I usually have to dig down about 5" and then pull the stake straight up to get it out. And coyotes, when fighting a trap, will jump straight up, rather than out.

I followed the drag marks through 2 cut bean fields, through the bean shats, making circles, figure eights, into ditches, out of ditches, and so on into a winter wheat field, which didn't leave any marks to follow. So now he's gone, with $10 worth of trap and stake hanging off of a leg. Every ditch I got to, I just KNEW he was going to be hung up in the bottom, but he always came out the other side.

Oh well.

That's my toolbox. I wanted one that didn't take up too much room, like the plastic ones you can buy, so I built this one a few years ago with scrap wood. It's got everything I need to work on the Jeep or another vehicle, jumper cables, couple tow straps and chains, and all the tool;s I'd need to build a house, minus a circ saw. And it hides the shotgun and bandoleer that fits between it and the seat back.

Just like having my shit with me.

Didn't seem to help much with the diesel truck.............just saying. :)

I don't keep my bag of give a fuck in the box, Ron.

After seeing what they can do in a snare, I've doubted using anything by earth anchors if some sort. As I was trying to our a bullet in his head, he went straight up, out, forward, every which way. After seeing that I knew there was no way a peice of rebar would hold them. I've read that a lot of trappers use two stakes angled opposite, but unlike anchoring them solid or to a tree or heavy brush of sort.

Do you get much for a coyote out there? House they're fur? Most of ours are just the standard grayish color, so they aren't the big $$

The neighbor had a few last year, and I think he averaged around $40. Nowhere near a fox, but I just want to catch some for bragging rights. The double stakes need an adaptor on the swivel, and I don't have any. But realistically, I wasn't expecting a coyote anyway. I might need to start using the earth anchors. The problem is that I set in the middle of fields a lot, and if I can't get it up, I'd rather not have it there to get tangled up in a seeder or something. I expect that would piss off the farmer.

looks like you have a good start to the season.
i like the way you finish the fox off. zero damage, nice. you are so right about the blood on the light colored fur. even on the coyotes lighter grey fur it dont come all the way out.
you must have a hell of a fox population in your area.

There's more than a few.

2 reds today. With the malaria flaring up, I really wanted to see empty sets. Instead, I caught these two.

Just took a couple shots of NyQuil. Catch you all on the flip flop.

Fever broke last night, so I should be good for another 10 months or so  Now I'm into the dizzy, weak, eat everything in sight stage. But it was so fucking cold, I really didn't want to be out this morning. Wind is whipping.

But the cold is good to keep the critters moving. I just hate the wind.

Been low 30's here, pretty cool for us. Talked the wife into dragging the mattress into the living room to sleep by the fire instead of kicking on the heater.

Wish we had more critters here so I could supplement my duck hunting budget. Just don't seem to see much besides rabbits, coons and yotes. Armadillo hides bring much these days

You could probably get $20-$25 for your yotes.

I wouldn't fucking mess with armadillo hides. I touch them as little as possible when I kill them. They carry the plague.

Armadillo skin hats are all the rage these days.

They carry leprosy if you eat them undercooked. Not so sure about the plague.

That could be what I'm thinking of, but I'm pretty sure I've heard the plague too.
