Another Season

Postby assateague » Fri Nov 16, 2012 9:53 am

Checked the traps for the first time this morning. Only set 12 traps yesterday- I have to slowly ramp up to 35-40, since its hard to check sometimes running kids around every morning, and trying not to get fired.

Got a cat and 2 grays this morning, which is great. Doing well is usually 10%, so I'm a little ahead. A lot ahead if you count the cat. And for the record, I'd much rather knock a pissed off fox trying to get me than turn loose a cat. Sonofabitch was livid. If I can see a house, I don't kill them, so he got lucky. But he was pushing his luck.

Pretty hides there. They look healthy. I killed one last week that was nasty as hell.

Grays will hopefully go $22-$25 this year, fleshed and stretched. Reds will clear $40 by a ways, but I have very little access to red-catching land.

I almost shot one of those bastard turkey hunting this year. Freaking thing snuck up behind me and was about 3 ft from me. Couldn't swing my gun around fast enough to get on it though. Guess I sounded like a turkey.

Funny you mention that- the female had 4 pellets of what looked like #2 or #4 lead in her front shoulder and leg, all healed up in the hide. Took me a while to get them out without effing up the hide.

I don't think you know the meaning of that word.

I'll set for coons around Dec 1st. Before then, their pelts aren't very good.

Got my first triple this morning, ever. Had 2 sets about 6 feet apart right on the edge of the woodline, and another at a call stick about 10 yards out in the field. Got there, and all three were full with nice big females.

Well, today was a new record for me. Unfortunately, it was possums. Out of 15 traps, I had 6 possums. Ugly, hateful little bastards. The nice part is that they lay there playing dead so you can hit them a good whack first swing. I was going to set out another 15 on Tuesday, since I'll have more time to check them over the long weekend, but if the possum situation plays out again tomorrow, I may rethink that.

Good lord we never got that much. Want to kill some foxes? We've got plenty of reds here, but the best Ive gotten when I used to trap is around 18-20 sending them to the Canadina Auctions through a broker in Va Beach.

Yes it was aweful. He got hung up in a snare I'd set for a beaver on the Chicohominy River. I got the hell beat out of me.

Where were you on the Chicohominy River? I live pretty close to it during certain parts of the month when I'm up in VA.

I wasnt. I lived, if thats what you call it, in Portsmouth for a year after leaving NC and before moving back home to the shore. Had a buddy who lived in Hampton and we would trap the WMA over there near Rt 5.
Trapped a double stripe skunk there once too. Dang thing wasnt dead and we had to toss conibears at it like frizbees trying to kill it. Eventually I made a mad dash with the club that didnt end very well for me or the skunk.
