What's the best solution for getting the skunk smell off the fur. Skunks are leather out?

I don't mess with them. They're only worth about $3. But yes, they're leather out.

Prices must have dropped. Was looking at another forum and they were getting 10 average. But it was an old post. Plus you can sell essence also. Not sure for how much. I might just tan it for Hanging in the house

As far as I'm concerned, the only thing they're good for is setting back where they were caught. Not sure out there, but around here you're almost guaranteed a fox a day for 3 days or so in a set you caught a fox in.

I was reading a story yesterday about a different type of float set for beaver, and thought of you. Google "a-frame float set for beavers", or something similar. Looks like it'd be pretty slick.

I caught a smaller red tailed hawk this season. Had it not been a week or so after the eagle, it would've been something, but as it was, I was just pissed that he screwed up the set.

That does look like a great idea. Will have to see what I can do about making one in the next week or so

So I should throw a leg hold or snare there? It was caught in a mink box with a 110 conibear. He wasn't all the way dead and he was hit in the neck. Had to finish him with a stick.

Finished skinning the critters from yesterday. The ermine have a potent gland. I found that out the hard way. The skunk went fast and smooth. I'm soaking it in baking soda, soap, a little peroxide and water. I thought it would be worse.

I would put a dirt hole set there. Your hands are going to stink, since that spray really gets in the dirt good. I've only ever caught them in legholds, and setting back, while gagging, generally produces very good results.

Works better if you bait it with one of these

I forgot to post my results from the other day. I set 6 out of my dozen traps on Saturday, thought I should try to figure out what I'm doing before I spread them all out, when I went back out Sunday I had 2 dead rats. Is 33% success rate normal?
Tonight I set up 4 of them on stakes to be baited and go out in open water like I saw on one of the YouTube videos that assa posted, I will put them out next time I go out.
This little feller was in the first trap I checked.

10% is very good. When you're in a new spot that hasn't been trapped before, it'll screw up an average, but if it works out to 10% at the end, you've done well.

Have you ever seen anyone be successful with the conibears wired up on a stake before?

I honestly don't know much about rat trapping. My neighbor has excellent luck using the float sets with an apple on a stick as bait. About a 2 foot square platform. He even puts them in bigger water, tied to the shore with a piece of 550 cord and pushed out.

If you're not already doing it, bait them with apple slices. Muskrats love apples.
