A Wire and Canvas Wood Duck

Postby RickC » Tue Jun 11, 2013 7:56 pm

I haven't posted here in awhile but this is a wire and canvas that I'd been working on. Had to put is aside for a few days while I get started on a few green wing teal, some for a raffle some for this seasons rig.

Thats where Im usually sitting and carving the heads, and putting the wires on, when the weather cooperates.
Thanks everyone for the compliments. Couple things left to do on it, hopefully I can get it done this week.

Cool looking bird rick! Reminds me of my grandfather's stories of my great grandpa guiding hunters and hunting over canvas and wood decoys he made himself. Unfortunately, none of his decoys survived, at least there aren't any in the family. Thanks for sharing

Glad to show it here. When I decided to get into carving I looked around for awhile at what was available and really got interested in them and their history. After researching them and the wood, cork and foam I decided this would be my primary medium. Partly because I can get everything I need at a local Wally World or hardware store and partly because of the fact there arent that many who do these and I'd hate to see it fade into the history books. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Heck Rice who's pretty well known in the wire and canvas area and the mans 75 years young and can put out some outstanding work. His mini wire and canvas birds are pretty awesome as well. I'm working on a complete puddle duck rig that I will hunt with this season. Hopefully I'll have it all done in time and can post up some field shots during the season.

How long it take you to paint something like that?

All together probably 8 hours total. Mainly because I went back and tried a couple things, blending and dry brushing.
