All Wire and Canvas Teal Rig

Decoy carving talk of all skill levels!

All Wire and Canvas Teal Rig

Postby RickC » Mon Sep 16, 2013 10:56 am

My quest, and experiment, of using nothing but wire and canvas birds this season officially started this morning. I got behind in completing them all the way and have 3 that I need to do some balance adjustments to, but I have to say it was pretty cool seeing my hand made birds out in the water. Too bad I couldnt get some pics with dead birds. No big push of birds around here yet.

How durable are they?

I'd like to know this too. Also how do you waterproof the canvas? The paint do it?

The canvas is 100% cotton. After it is put on and wetted with a water/gesso mix is shrinks. While the outside is coated with gesso and then paint the inside is not so the canvas is not totally waterproof much like the sails made from the same material years ago.
Market hunters made these to boost their rig numbers without a lot of expense but I havent found any literature on durability and longevity.
This season will be a long experiment to find these answers.

If you need a staffer to help with durability tests I could probably help you out.

The rcp felt like a real quality decoy that would last a long time. It would be really cool to come see you make a few sometime.

Thanks DH, making the RCP was as interesting as any due to not having any real specific dimensions to go by but fun none the less.
Dont know about a few as it takes a few days for me to do one with work and all. But if I have everything ready to put together its possible to do one in a day, ready to paint. The heads usually take 4 - 6 hours, getting the canvas on the readied frame 3 - 6 hours as I do them with a knife and rasp.

I'm interested in seeing the framework come together. Carving the head and paint seem pretty strait forward.

FIFY...

While it may be straight forward, I think that watching someone carve the head would be pretty cool. There is a lot of skill that goes into making the head come to life. Paint too...

I wasn't meaning any disrespect by what I said at all if that's how it sounded. If it did I apologize to you Rick. I know for a fact that I cant carve a head or paint as good as Rick and didn't mean for it to come across like that in any way. I'm really interested to see the guts of it and how it goes together.

I didn't see it as disrespectful. Many decoy makers carve their heads, but not many make a wire and canvas decoy. It's intriguing...

Fuck those guys. I don't care if the barrel cost one million dollars (Dr. Evil's voice) if its got an Echo insert in it it's worth all of 5 bucks. End of discussion.

He already bitched about one. It's on here somewhere. The barrel was laminated yeti dick and unicorn horn laced with pixie dust and saber tooth end pieces but it wasn't good enough because of the poly insert.

Rick how much time goes into one of your minis compared to a full sized decoy? Working on that small of a scale seems like it would be more difficult.
