Shoveler Drake

Postby Scott R » Sun Aug 17, 2014 10:32 am

Feeling better and after getting 2 birds out of the way I'm focusing a little more on cleaning up some older carvings that have been sitting around not painted. Finished this one up last night. I think it's the 3d shoveler I've done. Still working on the pattern but it's a good hunting bird. I think I carved it roughly 1.5 -2 years ago. Not real old but not a recent bird.

This is hollowed tan cork with a tupalo head. As it sits with no keel it weighs 15.3 oz. I think I can roll it with less than 4 oz of keel so it should finish at just over a around 18-19oz. Will make a good walk in bird.

I'd really like to see your hunting spread.
Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

It's not what you would expect. It's like any other spread...it gets used and abused. Some get shot, some get dropped/thrown, dog steps on them, bags get stacked on top of each other. Just like any normal hunter.

I do a have a couple of shots of ones that were hammered on hunts. We tend to let them get as close to water as possible..sit if they will.. before shooting. In the process decoys are going to take a beating occasionally. Here's a shot of one of mine that was hit on a canvasback hunt.

Here's one of my brother's that took a load on a timber hunt.

Bottom line....I would imagine there are a lot better looking spreads out there somewhere.

It's not everyday that you see a handmade spread. Very cool!

Those are some great photos Scott, that hen next to the matching decoy that took some shot is really awesome.
