Newest hen mallard: no airbrush

Postby Mean Gene » Tue Apr 14, 2015 3:44 pm

2 weeks ago I set out to carve a hen mallard, and then paint it without the use of an airbrush: something I had not tried on any of my carved decoys before. I also had to fit it in between flocking and painting plastics. This morning I finished her up and sealed the paint. She is now as good as she is going to get. It's not the best there is, but it's the best I've done, and I learned a TON of things by putting down the airbrush and using only good old fashioned paint brushes. This one took forever to paint, but I really enjoyed it.

That block is beautiful.

That would be displayed in my house!
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams

What do you seal the paint with?

Damar varnish. It's high gloss, but when you mix it 3 parts thinner to 1 part varnish and don't soak the bird in the mix it seals and dries flat.
