I agree with early intro to feathers and birds. Taz and his litter mates were introd to water early, breeder fed them in the kiddie pool starting around 4 weeks, slowly adding more water over the next few weeks. This was in January and Feb, no other access for water. Before they were picked up they were swimming around in the pool for fun.

Ki likes his new pigeons! Hopefully after a few of these little sessions, he won't go too crazy when he gets a dove in his mouth. And no apparent harm done to the pigeon.

When you have enough birds to afford a loss or two, you might want to let him start carrying them around without the sock, so getting sloppy with hold will mean losing his bird. Tickles the coyote just to cart them around - but he really likes catching those that don't keep a eye out for ground predators.

Yep. Just going from table to the yard he started getting goofy on me. We'll build up to that.

WTF dad? Now you want me to carry a goose?
Ki_1st_goose.jpg

His first goose. Did fine with it in the water, had a hard time carrying it on land. Didn't do any better with the next two, but I guess he'll learn, although we won't be focusing on geese much. Can't wait for ducks!

I have a smaller lab who really struggled at first bringing in honkers.
The water was easy enough but he simply was not large enough to mouth it up and run back with it on dry ground.
He started to drag them back but tripped up by stepping on the wings.
Two years ago he retrieved over 28 in one hunt and now has no problem.
You are most likely right about him learning how to retrieve them.
As long as he has the drive he will figure it out.

Ki only weighs about 60lbs soaking wet after eating and before his morning dump. He kept trying to get his mouth around the middle and could only get a mouthful of feathers. I showed him to grab by base of wing or neck and he could carry it then. Not too worried about it.
