3 legged tell me a story

I was just scanning through the pictures and this whole time I thought your name was some kinda inside joke but I see you actually have a 3 legged lab. I'm just a little curious as to how/why you have a 3 legged dog (which I think is pretty cool).

His nickname in college was tripod, so when he saw a dog with three legs, he figured it was a good fit

The short answer is my dog has less brains than drive. The longer answer is Tug (the tripod) broke the 150lb rated swivel clip on his chain and fell out of the back of my truck on the way to a hunt while driving 60 mph. The Xray showed the rear left femur had 12 loose pieces of bone over about an 8" area in the middle. The doc was skeptical about the chances of saving the leg, only reason he tried was because we are friends. He put 2 stainless pins in the femur and wrapped stainless wire around the loose bone to hold it while it healed. Six weeks later the pins came out and the bone was healed, but Tug wouldn't use the leg. The doc guessed there was too much nerve damage. We opted to take the leg, one week later the sutures came out and I hunted him the next day. He retrieved every duck shot that day. All of this happened in Nov of. '08 and he is really showing the wear on his body now. I have no doubt that it won't be long before I have to put down an otherwise healthy dog, but once his hip or knee goes out what else can I do? Even now if I let him hunt too hard he spends the next day dragging himself around like a seal on land.
Last season he beat a male black lab half his age on a swim retrieve to a duck. The drive is still at 110 percent, but his joints are failing him.
I like that stupid bastard better than most people I know.

I had something similar happen to my dog Hoss. Only I was going about 15 mph rounding a corner. He wasn't chained in and was standing on the wheel well of my truck and when I turned he just riled out the side fracturing his leg in 3 places. I felt like a piece of shit turning arround and seeing him hold his leg up with that stunned look on his face. So now to this day I chain him in so he can only stuck his nose out the sides.

Moose rides in his crate which is strapped in to the bed of the truck. Except on long trips.

Yup, my wife would leave with the pup if she saw him in the bed of the truck on the highway

I'm just not a fan of having the crate in the bed, the dog justified buying the canopy. I know, could have saved a leg and a bunch of money had I bought the canopy first.

Tug is a terrible "inside" passenger. I think he gets anxiety or something, he paces the whole back seat, back and forth, whining the whole time. Drives me fucking nuts.

Your dog sounds like my chocolate. Almost like they could be brothers...except for yours can hunt. My chocolate needs Xanax to ride in the truck with me. I think I tell him to shut the fuck up about every 20 seconds until he finally settles down after about 30 mins if the trip lasts that long. I bring him for a walk damn near everyday and it's the same shit, for 2 years now.
