Just got a female a few months ago. I'LL never own a male again. I think the bigger question is why he is giving it away.

long story. He has a very fine male from a very reputable breeder. He bought this one which isn't born yet, to start a good line here in Humboldt. However he breeds terriers also and decided he doesn't have the room for another dog. Asked me if I'd take her if he could keep the breeding rights. The breeding rights thing doesn't bother me. And we're not doing it for profit. Won't breed her often, and would mostly do it for local hunters and hunting friends. May sound alittle ridiculous but he does this with his terriers and is very well known amongst deer hunters for em. Has created a very nice line of deer dogs here

Just sounds shady to me... Whats the info on this pup? Who's it out of? If he doesn't have room for another dog he sure doesn't have room to be dealing with a litter of puppies! What if the dog end's up being a real bootlicker? He still gonna breed it? I'd stay away from it. As far as females go I feel that they tend to be a little easier to train as they tend to mature a bit earlier and are more eager to please. That's just from my experience. Dogs are individuals so where when my female is in season there isn't much difference in her personality so we just keep on training, and I've seen some that are like most women, can't function, think and become very disinterested in anything that you want from them. You just get what you get and learn to work with the individual dog. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Matt I totally get what you're saying and respect your opinion. And I knew my post would generate some hesitant responses. I'll explain alittle clearer. My friend is a very good friend and very well respected rat terrier/ mountain feist breeder and dog owner. He's gonna send me all the breeder's info tomorrow. I know he's been researching chessie breeders for over a year now. And he's very happy and excited about this breeder. But you're right. And I'll wait and see what he has for me. I don't intend on jumping into a dog situation like this blind. Absolutely not. I'll do my own research after he sends me the info.
As far as the dog goes, my buddy stated if the dog is a dud or doesn't hunt or is a bootlicker, he said he'd take it back as a family pet. And he's good for his word. I trust him fully.
As for breeding, if it were a dud, we clearly wouldn't breed it. He has the room to breed, just has his terriers occupying most of his kennels. We vaguely discusses doing this in the past anyhow. And if bred, it would be done here
We also wouldn't consistently breed her litter after litter. Not our intent.
Hope that cleared up some questions. I know it sounded like I was jumping on a free dog, which I'd never do
Let me know of any other concerns ya got that I may not be thinking of

They all go through some kind of false pregnancy after a cycle. My current one just gets really affectionate like she's knocked up and the previous female would gather toys everytime and bag up with milk every few cycles or so. I've also heard of a few people that end up going for an xray thinking that their dog is carrying a small litter. Kinda get nervous when you see milk and then start wondering just how well you kept them locked up..

Forgive me but I am a little passionate when it comes to breeding and chessies. I see new backyard breedings constantly which in the long run will be the demise of the Chesapeake which for now is still a very primative and nostalgic breed to hunt and compete with..
