Finally got a chance to take Atlas down to the Rio Grande today. We did a quick photo shoot and the worked on the steadying drill from Fowl Dogs one. Unfortunately no actual video of the fowl dogs training as my daughter had to help me with the drill.
Last season i spent a lot of my hunts solo and he had developed a habit of running out of the blind at the shot. I staked him in the blind for most of the season, Today he went from creeping or orbiting (running in small circles while maintaining the heal position) to taking one tiny creep backward at the gun shot. I threw the dummies and birds, worked the calls and shotgun with blanks, while my daughter worked him. Since we had no other dog to help us with the drill i was also the pickup dog. I was very impressed with his progress.
This was a fun retrieve after we finished training. I went easy on the distraction so we would end with a success.
