Trucking around...

Postby Rick » Thu May 08, 2014 7:01 am

Morning news said there's a bill in the Louisiana legislature to outlaw dogs riding loose in a truck bed. Be interesting to see how it fairs, but as hard as I cringe when I see a dog going down the highway on top of a tool box, I'm against it.

I'm not sure but think Arkansas must have a law because I never see dogs in beds of trucks unless they're in a kennel.
I forget which town has an ordinance that says you can't leave dogs in the cab but I ignore that because it's winter.

I ever don't let Atlas ride loose because he proved himself untrustworthy (very low speed luckily). However as much as I agree with keeping the dog secure in the bed, it doesn't need government oversight.

We find it no great feat to teach the dogs to keep all feet on the truck bed or main deck of a boat. True, they may get tossed in the event of an accident, but that's a risk we also take whether they're in the cab with me or in their bungeed, but not bolted down crate in the back. Handy for me because after rinsing Peake, he dries off faster curled in the open truck be than in his crate.

In MN it's illegal for your dog to ride in the bed of your truck free, but legal for a person to ride back there

I don't think you guys could do that, even with mandatory lobotomies and a million years. It's a special kind of dumb around here.

Before we ponied up the money for a kennel, ol scooter would have to tough it out. He never jumped, but we would always be on a slow country road, and nothing serious like a highway.

It's the law here. No surprise I know. But Charlie rides free. Cadee I don't trust yet. She's either kenneled or tethered.

Someone finally said it.

A kennel is probably decent protection from road rash but that's about it, but just imagine the dog on a chain in a rollover.

I know JR's Tug wound up with a bad injury but I've seen more dogs than I can remember thrown from cars in crashes and none suffered major injuries. They're resilient

My dog rides free around town but usually on long road trips I ll kennel him in the bed of the truck. The idea of chaining my dog up in the bed of the truck scares me though. Either in the kennel or free on his own I'd rather have him thrown from the truck in the event of a wreck.
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams

My dog was in his spot I built when I hit that bridge on Dec 10, 2010. I estimate we hit at a 45 degree angle going about 45 mph. He slept right thru it.
