Brushing helps a lot so you don't have to bathe them.

Yeah same here. It also helps that my truck always smells like wet dogs. One of my dogs currently smells like poop and the other smells like shit.

Yep, daily raking and brushing seems to help. If you don't like smelly dogs, daily up keep and shedding, you could always get a WPG.

Some dogs just stink naturally. I've read that changing their diet can help.
I have a Jack Russell that stinks when she gets wet. It's not "foul" it's just an odd odor.

Marsh mutt makes a shampoo that is supposed to keep their oils in their coat. I use it and my dog is nice and soft and not smelly, but I honestly couldn't tell you about the hair oil stuff.

I use it when my wife has finally had enough and bathes them. Though it seems with mine brushing does help a lot. I forbid baths from here till the end of season. Wife always counts down to the day for that reason and we made the most of last year's close.

Supposedly the oil is what gives them the wet dog smell. In the off season I would use a regular shampoo, and the marsh mutt during season when oils are needed.

I don't know the truth of it, but I've been told that with some dogs, bathing regularly makes them smell worse, because it pushes their oil production into overdrive. I suspect that's why the MarshMutt shampoo is different-it cleans them, but preserves the oils, so they don't try and make more, and , thus, get stinky again.
And clean their ears well, too. A LOT of the sink will come from the ears. The recipe for the purple stuff I got from Jarbo works like an absolute champ.

Spray bottle with 1:4 listerine and water. Mist them down and let them air dry. The spray kills the bacteria when in the nasty water and keeps them from getting musty.

Don't they call Goldens, 'Rugs', because they smell like a wet rug?
I'm teaching my cat to retrieve. Got it swimming good and it isn't gun shy. Riding in the car needs a little work yet. Think of the joys of a self cleaning retriever cat. And it doesn't eat as much as a dog, it buries it's own shit and it doesn't bark when the mailman comes.
