I really don't care. Big or little they are all fun.

What I do really want to get is a Cackling goose.

https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Cackling_Goose/lifehistory
"The smallest form of the Cackling Goose is only a quarter the size of the "Giant Canada Goose" subspecies."

I have seen these little guys on occasion. The size of a mallard or a little bigger.

I shot one. In the hand it's like an oversize mallard but not by much. You'll go "that's it"? Because you've handled a giant one.

Looks like tomorrow might be a good day. Two of my fields are holding plenty of geese, one with about 300 and the other with maybe 75-100. I think I will hit the small flock first and save the other field for Monday. Who's going out tomorrow?

Pretty much everybody in South Louisiana will be hazing ducks tomorrow. Good luck with your geese

“Not I,” said the poor fellow hunting the east zone.

Because of this silly zoning, only place where a west zone hunter can hunt further east than an east zone hunter, go figure.

Looks like the Illinois Game Commission gets help from The Pa. Game Commission in setting season boundaries. That is really dumb.

When I got to my spot it was loaded up with geese, so as we were setting up we were bombarded by the most ducks I have seen in probably 10 years. Woodies and Mallards everywhere but we decided not to shoot them because we would blow the geese off the pond, so we didn't shoot a duck. I know a stupid move but we had hundreds of geese in our face shortly thereafter. Unfortunately our shooting was very poor so lets just say the geese will live to see another day. I did get nice and drenched so that was at least something. Monday the ducks die......

You can take Salem out of the country but you can't take the country out of Salem.
You can take a Yankee to Texas and he's still a Yankee it's burned on forever. You feel me?

I've been called a Yankee in Venezuela and they weren't Cajuns. Panama too.
They'll call you a Yankee too no matter what you identify as...Yankee.

I'm a proud West, by God, Virginian by birth and, therefore, a "damn hillbilly," in Ohio. Had to move way the hey south to get demoted to Yankee.

Sounds a lot like gender fluidity.

Just walked in from hunting Presque Isle ( P.I.) this a.m and it's exceptionally slow. There was a layout boat at the head of the bay and they were doing some shooting but I'm not sure that they weren't blasting mergies. Anyway had one small flock of BB and Buff heads fly my way but never got closer than 70 yards and that was it. Very very few birds seen this a.m. and hunter action was minimal at best. Don't know if it will get better from here on. Have to wait and see I guess. Never even shouldered the gun.......

Was at my spot this a.m. and today there is NOTHING. Major storm headed our way with Lake Effect snow so we could get a few feet of snow depending how the wind goes. Hunting will be difficult if even possible. Glad I got a new snow blower Ariens Deluxe 28. I have a feeling it's going to get a workout.

Man...I guess stock up on beer for crying in.
I think you're right.
Lakes are warm still and the incoming icy blast will put the lake effect snow in the news.
Sorry. Maybe you'll get lucky.

The more I think about this past weeks hunt on Sat. I'm coming to realize I was right in the middle of some mini type of migration. There were more ducks than I have seen in the past 5 years combined. It's too bad all I had with me was my Mag 10 and T shot and the 10 is a full choke gun. If I would have started blasting away any bird I might have hit would have been turned into burger....

Scouting at P.I. this morning showed that there are fair numbers of birds, even if they do all fly out to the lake every morning, but not the types of numbers we are used to seeing from years past. Even the lowly coot used to flock here by the thousands now you are lucky to even see them. Regardless weather is going to be too nice for ducks any time in the future and our two feet of snow is staring to melt so I will continue to monitor the bay for a decent day of N/NW wind, snow and cold. Happy T day to everyone.

If it's any consolation the hunting at big lake was weak. I got lucky by being ready to just hunt wood ducks I've been thru this before.
Those guys are beating their heads on walls trying to figure it out how to kill mallards and where.
Watching them stress about it is bitter-sweet because these same guys had me chasing my tail when it was good. Seeing them all humble ...is good for me.

Got to P.I. early and put out a Blue Bill spread and waited. Watched thousands of birds leave the bay just before daylight and then we waited ( had a noobie with me however he is 66 y/o ). Good weather this a.m.: cold- 28 or so, a NW wind of 15-20mph, spitting snow, but very few birds trickled back. Scratched 1 Buff head and the noob got to shoot at a couple of Buff heads but missed. Sat around until 11: 00 and then called it. Very few guys out, and only 1 layout that never fired a shot. We did what we could but he wasn't dressed for it and was like a popsicle when I called it. My one word of advice to him this morning was that fishing waders, stocking foot no less, just won't cut it going forward...
