He passed down his old 870 wingmaster 16 today. Just want to make sure the barrel is good for steel? It's an old one and not sure how to tell. I assume it's no problem for it but this is a gun I don't want to tear up

has a one inch gap between the barrel and where the choke tube starts. This SOB is gonna be LOUD! lol

Hmmm, there is a way you can tell the year from the serial number with. Remington, you'd have to google it, I cant remember but know the letters in the serial represent numbers in years somehow.

I had one of those chokes cut off and had screw in chokes put in a model 12 win.

That's what I plan on doing at this point. Would kind of like to keep it the way he had it just cause but who am I kidding the chokes a piece of junk :lol: What's it run to get it done?

I think around 150 but its been awhile. Also had the forcing cone lengthened to help the pattern.

First find out what year Wingmaster you got.
My father bought me a wingmaster in 1975 for my first duck hunt.
Steel was not required then and I've shot lots of steel through that wingmaster.

Here:
Remington Owners,

Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

According to the "Blue Book of Gun Values", the coding continues as follows:

As maybe seen, the year code letters duplicate; some knowledge of when the model was introduced should resolve the actual year of manufacture.

I'd leave it like grandpa had it,your not looking at a big time duck gun anyway. Its a keepsake not a tool. Use it for upland clays and doves. My kids do that to the guns I leave them I promise a haunting will happen. :o

Before you go modifying that old 16-gauge for waterfowl don't you think it would be wise to check and see how easy it is to get 16-gauge ammo in non-toxic shot?
How much does a box of 16-gauge in steel #2's cost?
Is it even available?
Is it worth it?

7/8oz #4 BPI load is a sweet load out of the 16
