Horse manure

Postby flight control » Sat May 03, 2014 6:02 pm

My dad's neighbor has horses, and therefore piles of horse manure of various ages. One of the piles is even covered with grass, must be some good stuff.

My question is, can you guys think of a reason why I couldn't fill this thing

With that stuff and grow strawberries out of it? He said I could take whatever I wanted, as long as I don't bring any of it back, and it seems like a shame to buy potting soil when I can get composted horse manure for free.

You might burn then up or create an inhospitable growing environment. Horse manure is high in phosphorus content, I believe, and some plants cannot grow in it. Guy I know destroyed his garden by over adding horse manure to it.

I use year old cow shit in my garden for what its worth. I rake it out over the top before planting. I do know too much is bad so you might want to mix it with soil.

I might try small scale at first. I was thinking since the pile I planed on getting it from was covered in grass it might be plenty "cool" to plant in. Thanks for the input guys

BAT GUANO man.....
High quality shit. ;)

But seriously why not just buy some potting soil?
I use a little every year for starting my tomatoes, peppers, and flowers but this year it just dawned on me that I have compost.

The reason the "grass" is growing on the pile of horse shit is because horses are fed grain or hay and don't digest it all.

That's also a good reason to not use horse shit...the 'volunteer' grain/grass that grows in your garden.
AT will say how he uses it no problem now...and.....
go.

It's not so much burning up with horse manure, although I said that earlier, but over supplying the nutrients. You should be good if you cut it with dirt.

Nah... fresh horse shit could have too much urea (N) and burn something up. With manure the urea and ammonia which are the source of the nitrogen are going to be lost to evaporation pretty quickly and already have a low N percentage like a 5 whereas some synthetic fertilizers can be 30 or even 46 percent N (for comparison) . Old horse shit that's been laying there long enough to have grass growing on it is nothing but organic matter which is what you need for creating hydrogen bonds which is how pants uptake nutrients on a molecular level and is fine to use. I wouldn't use pure horse shit in that barrel though it could have some drainage issues and get real mucky. Put some gravel in the bottom and drill a few holes if you do use put shit.

Our flower gardens are 100% horse shit. That pile you're talking about, I'd be surprised if, down about a foot, if that, it wasn't completely composted already.

Alright so I'll fill the barrel with a mix of peat moss, composted manure and something for drainage. Maybe add some human feces for good measure.

Sounds like a plan. Interested to see how it works out.
