Which is precisely why I don't go to those meetings. Seriously.

I would bet that the guy that got arrested did not vote in the school board election.

And if he voted for the other guy, then it's ok that he got arrested for speaking his mind?

Honestly, that is one fuckin' ridiculous statement Ron. Most people don't even know the individuals that are running for these positions, in places where the public actually elects them. All they have to go on is the sunshine, smoke and mirror that is in the voters pamphlet. Again if they even vote or elect them. Sometimes there will be a real dirt bag or douche and the word will get out to the public but, otherwise, most people won't know the persons "real" background or agenda(s).
Usually the board member that wins had less of his/her history known and, the most signs around town. They win because they make themselves the most "familiar" candidate by the time the votes are cast. Name recognition plays a major roll.
Also, I have noticed, over the years, that many of these lower level candidates don't even have anyone opposing them. I suppose that's the voter's fault also.

Are you saying that you only vote for people that have the best 'name recognition' or are you saying that you care so little that you don't look into who is running and what they stand for or are you saying that to you, it doesn't matter anyway? No, my point was that, where this type of position is elected, most voters won't have much info on the individual candidate but, again, this is not the way it is done everywhere. In many places these are appointed positions.
When someone runs unopposed it is because of apathy on the part of the voters in that area or the perception that they are doing a good job.
Consider this, with a population of 10,000 in a small town or a precinct there might be 6,000 registered voters (sometimes far fewer) in an ordinary election (school board, city council or dog catcher) usually the turn out is low, fewer that 50% registered vote. If there are three people on the ballot for one position and the turnout is 50% it would take only 1,001 votes to win an election and only 1,501 votes to win if two people were running. So our population of 10,000 is represented by someone elected by 10-15% of the population.Voter apathy is a problem at all levels, don't kid yourself. I wasn't trying to make excuses for it.
Think of how many friends and family you have and then people that you know. Quite often a small group can greatly influence an election but only if they vote.
I have no fucking clue as to whether on not the guy that got arrested voted in the school board election or not but it shows that citizens are not always represented by the elected officials as they might want to be represented. It shows too that when someone is elected they if they can get the other officers to go along with them can shove any crap they want down your neck.
All this time, I thought you were smart enough to know this.I never disagreed with the idea politicians at any level can decide for themselves how they will act and/or "reign", if you will. Our current national politics are a perfect example.

I think the current board probably didn't even come up with this 2 minute rule and, whatever board did, most likely had no intention for people to be arrested because of it. Therefore, to say it is his fault because he probably didn't even vote, that's just ridiculous. Even if he voted for the board member that told him to STFU, it wouldn't change what happened, would it?
