trimming a stock

Any of you guys ever trim a little off the buttstock of a shotgun. The one I am shooting is a little too long especially with a jacket on. Tips, Advice?

Nope, but I'd say to go ahead and get one of those sand-to-fit limbsaver pads while you're at it, since the original probably won't fit well after you're done, anyway.

This may be the hillbilly in me talking, but I'd say just pull the pad, set it in a miter saw, and cut. There's plenty of room before you get to the stock nut.

This is what I was thinking. I'm gonna give it a shot today after work.

The issue you're going to have with a plastic stock is depending on how much you cut off, you may not have anything left to screw a butt pad into

I haven't taken the butt pad off to look. I don't know if it has screws directly into the plastic or bolts threaded into the plastic. I will take a look after work today.

I've seen a write up on cutting plastic before. Believe they cut and then used JB weld or something to run the screws into.

Thanks Flight. Let me know if you run across it. I just worry about chipping the plastic. I'm going to buy a brand new saw blade before I proceed. I will add it is on a stoeger so if it gets a little messed up it ain't the end of the world.

To avoid chipping the stock when you cut it, put one wrap of blue painters tape or ordinary masking tape around the stock and mark that. Leave the tape on when you cut the stock.

Before you cut anything I would suggest that you try a thinner recoil pad at the length you want it cut to. You might find out that it is a hair too short for you. Better to do this then trim it too short and have a gun that doesn't fit.

Seriously, try a thinner pad before trimming anything off. It really lets you know if it's going to be too short or still too long.
