Do an internet search on the life cycle of the northern pike.........Then bait your hook with whatever it is that they eat.

next question..............

well, i'm looking more for where to look in a lake for them in the winter. are they in the shallows, deep water, points and stuff like that. i've never fished for them so i'm new to the whole deal with them. for bait, i'm probably going to use some sort of minnow. i'd also like to find out about good set ups for the tip up.

Pike like weedy edges where the elevation changes from shallow to deep, much like any predatory fish.

Step 1: Go to Fort Peck
Step 2: Set tip-ups in 20-30 feet of water with live minnows 3-5 feet off bottom, the bigger the better
Step 3: chase flags all day

You're welcome.

what do you recommend for tip up tackle for pike? right now i'm using dacron, a swivel on the end and some 12lb mono. is the ice line really necessary? I imagine I'd want a lot bigger mono for Peck, or a steel leader.

Replace your mono with some good fluorocarbon and you should be set, pike ice fishing isn't rocket science!

I have 50 pound Dacron on the spool, a little barrel swivel and a couple feet of # 20 mono. Add split shot according to bait size. I forget the number of the hook, but I use smaller hooks than most guys I run into.

I prefer 6's myself. Most here use 2 or 4

Cold weather gear plastered with ice armor or frabill is crucial to success

We have a jiffy ice auger, haul it in our otter sled with our pop up shabty, drive around pulling it all with the polaris drilling holes and dropping the marcum down till we find fish. We look really good doing it in our frabil and I've armor suits. Some days we drill 70 holes and never even get a hit, but that doesn't matter, we look so damned good that errybody on the ice will come set up next to us. Yeah, in the ice fishing world we are kind if a big deal

hmm, I'll have to check it out

At this point, I'd like to get an ice hut and a heater for sure, the auger I have is perfectly good-it's an Eskimo by the way. might get some extra blades for it too. My dad offered his auger up, but the blades are shot and I couldn't tell if I could get replacements. If I get the hut, I'll get an otter sled to haul the shit in. Right now my setup is geared towards being able to hike the stuff on my back, because there's no fuckin' way in hell I'm driving my truck out on ice.
