17 WSM

Postby Ajverret » Mon Nov 10, 2014 5:30 am

Any of u fucktards have one of these. Thinkin about gettin one to pick of some rabbits and coyotes from a distance and maybe some hogs. They only have 3 manufacturers making these : savage b mag, Franklin armory, and some other German company I can't spell. I'll be getting the b mag for Christmas because it's under 400$ the other 2 are 1800+. With a UTG leapers 6x24x50 and gunna get a Boyd's stock for it. That's the plan anyway

I would seriously reconsider...

The reviews coming in on that B-mag have been horrible.
Do some research and read up on it, but the majority of people that I've seen comment on the B-mag have not been happy.

I've read all kinds of reviews and it seems the earlier modules were junk and the later ones are better

I will go put my hands on it before I buy it but I'm getting the flutted bull barrel model and with the Boyd's stock it should be a different gun.
A review I read a guy did that exact same thing and is very impressed

The "German" company is Volquartsen and they are out of Iowa. I would find a good supply of ammo before I bought anything. You can probably find a used a BMAG for pennies on the dollar because ammo has been so scarce. Honestly, if I was going to buy one, I think I would fork out the money for a Franklin or Volquartsen, I love Savage rimfires, but the BMAG feels like a piece of shit to me.

Yes, why wouldn't you buy a dead cartridge?

I wouldn't buy any 17 caliber centerfire if I weren't loading my own. Not only are you at the mercy of their availability, their offerings usually stink anyway...

I don't think the 17 wsm is going to be around for very long either. Savage has had too much trouble with it and their rifle, and there aren't any other rifle manufacturers jumping on the band wagon.
Just an opinion from a guy who's been a 17 fan for a long time.
I just think there are much better, less risky options out there...

This. I had high hopes for the .17 WSM, but Savage shit the bed on the design. That cock on close bolt is miserable and the whole thing feels shoddy.

I've seen bullet at cabelas around here I've been reading on other forums that the newer heavy barrel version is a lot better with accuracy and the bolt. And the cheap stock issue can be resolved with a Boyd's stock. I've been seeing a lot of 1" groups at 100yds which is plenty good enough for me. I'm going to cabelas to looks at one today to see how they feel.

Hornady has started making these bullets too and they arnt bad. The price on these bullets are pretty good. I'm not sure why but I reeeeaaaalllly want one of the rifles. I much rather a bolt action over a semi auto so I think the b mag would be a cool project to make a good little walk around gun to pick rabbits and coons off with

I looked at the WSM and went with the HMR instead.
Reviews on the Savage WSM were abysmal, and the really German company makes them in 17 HMR.
In fact, they just imported 100 each of the "American Varmint" rifle to test the waters here on this particular configuration of the 1517.
