Olly's 2015 Garden

Postby Olly » Fri Feb 27, 2015 5:00 pm

Going to keep track of a garden this year. Will be the same 14x7 raised bed garden I used last year. Haven't decided what I want to plant yet but I just mixed in some fertilizer last weekend and will be planting tomorrow or next weekend depending on the weather forecast.

I wish I could go a garden. Even if I could, I still have another two months before things can go outside

I thought about going outside and start working the garden. Then I remember it is -14F right now.

Good luck with the garden.

I enjoy doing it, but I've had two bad years of gardening. I'm going to make some big changes that I think will help when he have bad years. My dad puts black plastic down and cuts holes for the plants because he can't get around and doesn't want to deal with the weeds. Last year while my garden stagnated in the cold, his took off. I think that will solve one of my problems. The other is my soil is shit. I'm going to amend it quite a bit. I got lazy about this the last couple years and I think this bit me in the ass last year especially.

Decided to have a little fun with the garden this year and found this cool drip irrigation kit at home depot for pretty cheap. So I set that up today and also splurged on an automatic timer. Flint called it lazy, I called it smarter not harder

Tomatoes, carrots, garden beans, onion, cucumber, lettuce, watermelon, peppers, squash. I think that's it. I'm going to wait until next weekend to sow the seeds still a little cool here and at the start of the planting window still.

I was looking at chickens today at TSC. Still can't decide if they are worth it or not.

Looking good.

We warmed up more than 20 degrees today, only about 30 or so more before I think about gardening

Just pointing it out Flint. Calm your ass down and go paint your boat again.

Tometoes are on track. I have a mix of 8 week old starts from inside and 3 week old starts from a tray but it's been outside the entire time. I did buy some started peppers because they were a different varaity than I already had. "Dragon peppers". Can't wait to try them.

Cucumbers coming along just find as well as garden beans, carrots, water melon and the onion I transplanted.

My garden never gets a TON of sun light. To many damn trees but it's coming along.

We've planted them in old cattle syrup tubs before, just hadn't seen the barrels. Now we plant them in the flower beds behind the house.

Olly,
Assateague sent me some Trinidad Maruga Scorpion peppers and some Habaneros.
I saved seeds and grew plants this year. The idea is to save them peppers and make hot sauce. Use the hot sauce as insecticide on plants or eat it but who eats a pint of hot sauce? If you'd like I'd send you some peppers so you could do the same.
I made hot sauce today and I think maybe my hair is sweating. (that hot and it's a good heat)

These peppers have a very long season. 100 days or something until the first fruits. They are tiny tiny plants at first but if you use tomato cages and spray them with a solution of epsom salt every so often they get huge. (2 Tablespoons per gallon)They grow incredibly slow then balloon in August.

Try the epsom salt thing. It's amazing! Assa turned me onto that.
Your tomatoes will grow a foot just like that.

These are Scorpion peppers. They turn red. Touch the plant and you taste it a minute later.
