Waterfowl Activity: very little geese moving, way more ducks. Lots of high ducks heading south, mostly teal.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: worked 2 specks, they stayed upwind of us and decoys and landed wide.

Nice looking spread

We had them basically all in same area northeast of pit for wind. Next time, I think I'm going to spread them out a lot more. Today there was probably 40 feet from one end of spread to other end. First time setting that many FB specks for a hunt. Just wish we would have had more birds to work with.

My brother and I went to the deer stand yesterday evening in the somewhat cooler drizzly weather. (Typically good for movement). 2 bucks came out in my little sweet spot 50 yards north of the stand and Corey shot the bigger one at 5:25 pm.





15" inside spread 175 lbs 10 pt. Not a monster but a first buck to definitely be proud of

Date: nov 12 east zone youth hunt #1

Time: hunted until 10 am

Location: pit blind

Cloud Cover: none

Wind Direction and Velocity: 5 mph NNE becoming 10 mph about 7 am.

Temperature: low 50's

Barometer:

Moon phase: big

Special Notes: Brought my oldest nephew and a young man from my church

Waterfowl Activity: very few ducks early and then none later. Lots of goose traffic N and S

Waterfowl Responsiveness: mallards and gadwall worked to the new short barrel very well.

Kudos: kids listened well and breakfast was great.

curses: no birds and missed 6 shots on group of 8 mallards with feet down. Gadwall were shootable for experienced adults but not these fairly green shooters. Where are the teal? Saw 1 big bunch later in morning that looked and went on. Specks are still in preseason "we can't be bothered" pattern.

I can't help but be excited about the way the weather appears to be shaping up for our opening weekend. Big south winds Thursday and Friday, with a little rain friday evening as the front hits followed by Clear, Cold, and North winds 10-15 mph Saturday and Sunday.

I thought too,did not allow ducks in general to raft up safely on a calm gulf

I agree with teal on a South wind,but I thought they were coming from the South,guess not,interesting

Damned if I know, we just generally see them in waves from the northeast in our marsh. Might just be rebounding after coming off the Gulf to rice. Regardless, this morning's stiffest breeze of the season was from the south, and we popped not a cap on teal, proving, yet again, that I don't know buck diddly squat about weather and ducks.

Haven't looked to see who will be here. But if the birds do come, too, a stiff north or northeast wind usually makes most of them the easiest targets they're ever apt to be. They're much less likely to catch us looking when coming in from behind the cover behind and beside the blind, and once they're out front, they have to fight the wind to get away from the guns. Makes balloons of big ducks and slows the wee ones down some, too. Only apt to get tough with northwest winds which often has the big ducks dropping in right over the top of the blind, which tends to make guys lose their water, jump and watch them blow out behind that sweet cover with the wind in their sails. Beautiful thing, though, with good hunters who can stand ducks seemingly brushing their hats.

Yea, we face north and it's fun pulling them right over the top and ambushing them with their backs to us.
