2 real good reports from my area today. I didn’t go cuz I thought the thick ice from Friday would still be there, but it had all thawed. Ducks worked in great and lots of specks are back in area. I’ll be there tomorrow

3 green winged teal
3 gadwall

December was a serious struggle for us, usually January is pretty decent for us when conditions are ok. Lost 7 days to ice, so we are going to hunt hard through the 28th.

Date: Jan 12

Time: finished at noon

Location: pit blind

Cloud Cover: heavy with on and off sleet and snow

Wind Direction and Velocity: NNW 15-25

Temperature: 33 at shop 30 at noon

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: I needed this... after we had about 8 birds, we decided to wait and finish on mallard drakes. Took some will power and patience but paid off.

Waterfowl Activity: best flight this year of teal, pintail, and mallards. Not many specks moving around

Waterfowl Responsiveness: enjoyed breaking high flights and watching them drop really fast. Ducks were a little quirky with wing direction, wanting to fade away to west on their approach if they were west of blind, but the stuff east of blind came perfect

Hunters: Kevin and I

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s):

Special Equipment: 2 mojos on remote

Kudos: We shot well

curses: wished we had 4 men in the blind, but not often you can pick your shots so I enjoyed that.

Birds By Species:
4 mallards
3 gadwall
1 pintail
1 wigeon
3 green winged teal
1 speck

Thanks, we work hard to keep the grass fresh but not too “poofy” and we just make a gap for each shooter....speaking of...after big rain yesterday I need to cut some grass in the morning.

It was a nice surprise, I get a much bigger kick out of getting birds in right and letting my friends shoot...like today, than bands.

Going to look it up when I get a chance, looked like a newer band. Pretty shiny.

Date: Jan 13

Time: late season late flight, left at 2 pm

Location: pit blind

Cloud Cover: weatherman was drunk...prediction was clear, was solid clouds till noon. Hunted till 2 to enjoy sun

Wind Direction and Velocity:NNE 10-15 mph

Temperature: started at 27 never got above freezing

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: Jason drove from south of Alexandria to hunt with us (we are near state line)

Noticed at about 11 am we had a Ross goose sitting in blue goose decoys. I think it had been there all morning. It was still there when we left, rode 4 wheeler right by it. Did not look injured. Was preening and napping while we shot birds....I guess it was really tired...I didn’t care to shoot it because I didn’t feel like shooting it on water from point blank range was worth it.

Waterfowl Activity: not near as many as yesterday. Migratory were a lot higher, lots of new specks

Waterfowl Responsiveness: 2 single specks did tight, teal worked great, mallards did ok, everything else was really tough.....

Hunters: Eric dakota Kevin Jason

Guns:

Malfunctions: dakotas beretta (2 Years old) still jams occasionally, I had a rem nitro misfire. Seems I have 1 or 2 per box in really cold weather. Black clouds always go bang

Dog(s):

Special Equipment: 3 mojos on remote. Mojos were only effective on teal today

Kudos: we shot 6 ducks and 1 speck after sun come out at noon.

curses: birds were just tough to finish

Birds By Species:
13 green winged teal
4 mallards (3 drakes shot at 2 pm)
1 gadwall
2 specks

Photo Ops:

Kevin and I with birds minus 5 teal and a speck jason took when he left at 11 am.

Yea, had some moisture under my phone screen cover and had to make a screenshot instead of actually taking a photo because picture button wouldn’t work. Took case off phone once back in nice warm truck and now it’s fine haha.

Nice hunt Eric, glad to see you guys getting to play with the birds, and that food looks awesome! Last night we did some fried deer tenderloin with smothered potatoes and duck sausage. Next up, fried duck breast.

Thanks, I try to become a better “game cook” each year. Today my good friend who just had a baby a few weeks ago had one of those speck legs in her hands like a piece of fried chicken just getting every little morsel off the bone....really did my heart good.

December was really tough but I usually do my best in January. Migration about 2 weeks behind normal as far as the birds we get

Seems like we are hunting the birds that winter in Arkansas for the most part and most likely never see the coast...that’s my guess anyway....
