Post-Season 2018

Got back out in the duck boat yesterday for a ride with the family and to let Harry get in a little workout. Wife and little one did some beach combing for treasures (read: trash, mostly) along the sandy beaches of Lake Pontchartrain while Harry got some retrieves in when not distracted by various fish and crab activity in the shallows.

hind end headed out; some fella's big water blind in the back ground, likely did a fair bit of dosgris shooting here, with a few buffleheads and redheads mixed in. Didn't hunt this area at all after teal season last year so surprised to see so many blind structures in the area lately, more than previous seasons for sure.

Did allow for a trial run of the new GPS on the water and it was wonderful, a true game changer for our dark and early trips. Made one quick pass through a section of marsh in the area with the water not too terribly low and it's in great shape. No local mottleds seen, just local swamp lizards.

For the record, got third hand report of Buras area guide seeing teal down that way.....seems strangely early for migrants, maybe a wad of local holdovers, though there were north winds last week with a brief sting of lower humidity. Hmmmmmm

Thanks to handy work of hunting buddy of ours, Johnny coordinated getting some tabs put on my flat to better handle the stern weight of the 4-stroke 60.

Will hopefully water trial their angle this weekend then paint once I've settled on the final angle.

He also crafted us some custom Lucky Duck poles in the process. Likewise plan to get paint on these in coming week or two

All of the above happened while I was on a beach trip with the family which was awfully sweet to come home to, but then I checked the mailbox and found that I'd been drawn for a White Lake teal hunt the first week of the season. Have hunted the rice property a few times but really excited for the marsh experience.

Congrats all around. Reckon you really ought to make a casino pass before your luck runs out.

Those tabs will definitely help your hole shot, and will keep your bow from porpoising. I did something similar on a little 16' bait boat years ago, and was amazed at how fast I could get on a plane. They will slow your top end down a little, but the benefit should outweigh the detriment.

Lotto ticket en route to the airport today maybe.

Any reports you can recall from recent years on the teal hunting there in the WL marsh? My main interest is getting the experience with the little boats and water control structures and such, but thought the hunting to be usually pretty good too.

You're dead on with the porpoising matter. Yes it might hinder my top end but I'm already a bit overpowered as it is, I haven't been able to keep it in the water enough to top it out anyway, she wants to literally take flight (skipping). What I was always fighting was trimming it up high enough for my common shallow water escapades but then having to balance that with inevitable porpoising (or have a big buddy on the bow). This will keep the bow down and let me trim up plenty, can't wait to dial them in.

Only recent lottery marsh teal hunt report coming to mind was from two N.O. guys who've hit twice and hunted with me while on this end for it. Last year they were to hunt WL on the last day and hunted with me the day before, so I don't know how it went. But their September 2016 lottery hunt the day before hunting with me was top shelf - and had me pretty worried about sucking wind by comparison. Envy you the experience but can't stand the notion of missing a day on my own, for better or worse, enough to put in for the lottery.

Given that Jay and Paul have hit two years running, it might be a fairly well kept secret. Anyway, I expect you'll love it.

Can confirm that I've not gotten selected for anything at White Lake in a while, after an early hot streak for the rice hunts in 2008 to 2010 or so that resulted in some solid hunts but never put in for the marsh that I can recall. Anyway just glad to have lucked out this go round

My feelings exactly. I applied only once, and this was a few years back with no luck. I may try again next year. I just want to see what's out there, the hunting would be a bonus.

Had two or three really solid rice field hunts there, two for sure I can recall off hand. One was day of a strong storm front coming through not long after LST, Wayne told us he'd let us hunt a little late due to the storms. Lot of teal flight early, then teal and specks after it passed through. I couldn't blow a speck call for hardly anything but we killed a couple over the dekes that were at the blind. Second hunt was opening weekend sunday, warm weather with no wind, killed good mix of ducks and a couple more specks.

Have heard the regular season hunting in the marsh there can be as good as it gets, not sure how that's gone in recent years.

Was able to take my brother and nephew both on white lake youth hunts in the marsh. Brother limited out on ducks he picked out and nephew shot all the shells he had and killed a couple but had a blast.

Given what was discussed previously, I think on this thread, maybe this is a situation where migration shifts east a bit seeking water, so you might be in luck!

That’s what it says.

They are saying a weak to moderate one not a super strong one like we had in fall of 2015.

As long as I can float a boat for the first split I'm good but by the time the 2nd split opener rolls around I'm hopeful that hunters are able to spread out because water is abundant in the timber. Typically that is when we have our best seasons.
