Certainly does not appear to be many barred up cats in that crowd. In some way reassuring that a flight of young-of-the-year birds came all the way down here.

I'm pretty sure the parents and older siblings will show them the ropes as soon as the first shotgun goes off. Pack it up, head on out, away from the thirty seven man blinds.

I haven’t seen a blind down there that’ll hold more than 4 men.

Me either. I was just being sarcastic. Although, these 4 man blinds are a quarter mile or less apart for miles and miles.

Yup, we'll "short-stop" them back up north with our gun pressure.

I hope we have a good migration this year.

What’s the price range on those 3-4 man pits in the Klondike gueydan area

I hunted in a 26 foot blind twice last year on Pettijean—-some of best dirt in Thornwell

It was covered well too, glad I didn’t have that job but it was done right. No obvious duck hunter holes especially overhead

Roughly, from a low of $7,500 on up to well over twice that per - even large multiple blind leases.

Clawson has a big one (albeit not that dang big) north of there, too, but they remain rare exceptions. Though the 6 and 8-foot field blinds that were the norm when I got here are all but gone, 10s are still the most common. But as prices have climbed, 12-footers have become increasingly popular...

We have a 12 footer and it’s just right to me. I don’t want to be in a blind with more than 3 other folks anyway.

Don't doubt that's the trend, especially for the big kids, just know 12's as big as we've buried or leased.

Bunkie blind is 12 ft.......I don't care if it's 20 ft, I still don't care to hunt with large parties, 3-4 max. If weather's ugly and birds are diving in, fine, but when you really need guys to be still and cover up, just too many moving parts in the form of barrels, faces, pointing hands, etc.

Shoot, that's usually the case in my three (or four) man blind.

I snow goose hunted from a container sunk in the ground. I think there were 12 people and I think they could fit 15. I really didn't like it. What I disliked most however was being put together with others we didn't know. There were 7 of us in our group. That should be enough to get your own pit. I've hunted with 7 in our group and a guide from layouts and had no problem. The day we just kept getting singles upon singles, it was a little over kill on the guns  So I started taking pictures. But a good group of guys, we had a good time. With a big group and people you don't know thrown in, it just doesn't work. I've had a lot of fun with small groups hunting with people I don't know. I actually do that a lot at my one club. Me and a buddy hunting with another guy or two (you need 3 on the weekends to be in the first draw for pits, so it gives you a lot of incentive to pair up). Then you all socialize and have a good time. With 12, it just doesn't work.

For me it really depends on the hunting. Early season where I am hoping to get a bird, I really like to hunt alone. With 3 or 4 in the blind, who gets to shoot that one lonely duck that comes by? When hunting picks up and there are likely to be more birds together, I'm fine with more guns. I think for me. Are you shooting at more birds than there are guns? Bigger groups are fine, if they are the right people and you don't have 4 guns shooting at one bird. 8 guns at 20+ birds works just fine. Assuming they are the right people.

All our blinds are 3 man blinds (a requirement of our lease), but we mostly hunt 2 men per blind. I don't like hunting more that 3 men per blind because as Spinner said when you only have 1s and 2s coming in it makes for a slow day.

Most definitely, and of course everyone wants to shoot at that suicide single. BUT on occasion when a group of birds comes in right.......all those guns blazing is something! (and ideally productive with lots of splashing all around)

Know we've kicked around local books in the past, but didn't know if you (Rick) had come across or read this one. Just made it through it on my trip earlier this week and really enjoyed it, mostly covers the founding of the Coastal Club but also covers other historic clubs of the area.

Yes on the e-caller. Not a lot of success for a spring hunt when there was a dozen of us. We probably saw more snows than any trip, but it was a case where the migration had stalled and the birds had been there a while.

I think the extended magazine is the biggest goose saver. We had 5 come in. What should have been 5 immediately dead geese, I had time to shoot 4 shot at 3 different geese. I think they focus on shooting as fast as they can and not making their shots count. That's why 5 geese are not wiped out in the first volley from 12 guns. I don't think I have shot more than 5 shots. I just can't pick a bird and shoot faster than that. In this case my 4th shot dropped the last goose maybe pushing 60.

I did right when the e-callers were approved......pretty big shoot, just recall birds walking around me on the ground and having to hold the dogs by the collars from running down said walkers.

I have never hunted with that

I do use a cd used with that to practice ground snow sounds——which is all they come too anyway with a pneumatic call

John, the only e-caller hunts I've made were three carrying Rick Olsen, the grad student who had the Federal grant to study them prior to instituting the so-called "conservation" season. The drill was to flip a coin and then rotate 15 minute sessions of the e-caller with a Johnny Stewart tape or me hollering. Tape beat me 3.something to 1, but it was plainly the ground gabble that did its good. Whether it was the tape or me yelping, when the birds busted the rags and socks, they bounced. But when the tape's gabbling got loud, they'd very often return for another look, that yelping couldn't get, and perhaps make it to the guns that time.

A friend I shared that with then re-mixed (if that's the right term) a "greatest gabbling" loop that was the most effective tape I'm aware of for a time.

Really good mouth callers do seem to make them respond, good callers I mean. Like they know how to bend that high bark

I have a good bark with the call but I only am effective at lining them up on the field waaaay out, that’s it. They are smart. They know something is not right with that plastic bark

Then I got to get off of that bark or they really slide bad or avoid the water all together

Once approaching the field I go to ground murmur as continuous as I can varying tone and cadence

If the group of birds turns off barking and goes to murmur only in air,we gonna get a shot. They are looking hard and that’s the signal

Let them pass over once, make big wide blue goose turn and float over. We better shoot. Even though you’d bet your house they’d circle back and really get low like a speck death pass, nope. Oh they’ll fly over again, higher then that first pass.

In the old days they would get “right”,,,I can’t get that now. Maybe with a single or up too 3. But several 100. AINT going to happen
