1.) What flavor ducks we talkin mostly? early birds like Pins/Grays?

2.) Based on their "arrival" timing in the area, is that about the norm, early, late, etc.?

At this particular Pothole I did not see much for pintails. Quite a few gadwall, some mallards and Greenwing teal. Of course I’m looking through my phone so I’m sure there were some pintails in there. Also saw some canvasbacks.

In regards to their arrival timing I would say at least 85% or more of those birds were hatched or nested here in this local area. As the smaller potholes are drying up they’re all getting condensed together. Up the road about 7 miles where we were crane hunting 99% of those 40 plus flocks were mallards. There were a few flocks of gadwalls as well.

Hopefully I am answering what you asked if not let me know.

I will say that it seems like the hawks and Eagles are migrating in sooner. Same thing with crows. My buddy in Kansas said crows are already arriving down there. Cranes are moving in pretty steadily and besides the molt migrators that pushed through I have seen pretty much zero Canada geese come in. At least not in any significant numbers. Also very surprised I have not seen or heard any specs or snows.

Ha ha don’t put too much pressure on me!

Almost 10 PM here and putting blinds and crane Decoys in the bed of the truck and had a small flock of snow geese flying around. Maybe we will have some for the opener.

It's cooler here too. We went from 90 as high to 60.
It feels great. I th8nk I'll actually try and kill sone teal tomorrow. I'd bet the competition is thinking the same.
The parnell bunch is different except for one boat I recognize. There's a pair of guys that if I see them.i just back way the heck off and dilly dally on purpose so they can get set up first. I doubt they realize I'm "letting" them win the race on purpose. If I start hurrying up ....bad things happen so I just won't.

Got a picture of an icicle to share?

I may see that temp once during January every other year or so down here. I felt my skin drying when I seen that temp in your pic. Lol.

Thanks so much! Appreciate it and look forward to hearing from you as fall progresses.

And 26 deg this morning to boot! Front made its way through Chicago as I was leaving, much cooler there today than when I was there but still much more pleasant than the sauna that greeted me at the New Orleans airport last night at 11p.

Date: 22 September 2022

Time: morning

Location: ND

Cloud Cover: clouds slowly moving in

Wind Direction and Velocity: SE at 3mph

Temperature: Started at 26

Moon phase: just a sliver

Special Notes:

Waterfowl Activity: Ducks were buzzing the spread pretty well and going to what I assume is a little pothole about 200 yards away. First time I hunted this field so I don’t know what was on the other side of the hill but they were dumping down in it and I know the crop has not been harvested so it Has to be a little bit of water.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: well for just having crane decoys out the other species were interested. Today is the last day of our early goose season and I had a pair come over and I shot them both. Guessing if duck season was open we would’ve shot a limit or at least had the opportunity too.

Hunters: Vinny Quack and I

Guns: both shooting SX4

Malfunctions: my crane Decoys are in individual bags and when we arrived to the field one of them was ripped down the seam. Also both of my tiedown straps came loose. Wasn’t drinking last night I swear, when I put everything in the truck. Also Vinny Quack sliced her finger open when she was putting her blind together and coincidentally I sliced my finger open when I was taking my blind apart.

Dog(s): reaper who still does not like cranes!

Special Equipment: Nothing special

Curses: I do not believe in curses! Did wish that we had more wind because the roost was close and when the first three cranes came in and we shot and killed the three of them all the other ones got up and then went back down however then they decided to fly to the west instead of coming to our field. So maybe some people might consider that to be cursed who knows. As a sidenote the wind is blowing pretty good right now at about 17 mph. Wish it was doing that this morning!

Kudos:

Birds By Species: Three sandhill crane’s and to Canada geese!

Well in about 15 hours our regular season will officially begin. Right now the plan is to hunt one of the water holes that I have posted here on video. I think tonight I will go and push the ducks off and they should go to bigger water. I will set up about three dozen goose floaters and 4 or 5 doz ducks. I have not seen any geese using this water but I figured with it being Saturday there will probably be geese flying around and coming out of Canada. Still seeing molt migrators. My original plan was to get there about three in the morning. my daughter works at the local grocery store and one of the high school kids came in talking about hunting a spot That sounds very similar to this. So I think I’m gonna get there a bit earlier and suffer in the truck! Also it started raining last night about 9 PM and it rained through the night and most of the day. Nothing very heavy but enough that driving out there most likely won’t be an option. So I will have to carry blinds, Decoys, and guns into the spot. I will have a couple of kids with me so it shouldn’t be too bad. This land is my son’s godmother‘s husband‘s land. So I could just post it but I really don’t like doing that. I know I can’t hunt it every day so I don’t want to steal opportunities from others. Open land is one of the great features of the state and more and more of it goes away with people getting greedy. Still no guarantee that I will be the first person there. If I get beat I have many other options but this one is probably the most visible so I wanted to knock it out on the opener and then I can rely on more hidden places.

Being the opener I have very low expectations but I will be happy to be out there. The wind is supposed to start off at about 10 mph and boost up to close to 20 mph. Coming out of the west northwest so I am most excited about possibly getting in some of those molt migrators. I am very colorblind and the ducks are still mostly dirty looking so I struggle with picking out drakes. And it looks like we will be looking into the sun so I have low expectations on being able to pick out drakes.

Hopefully I will have something to share tomorrow.

Thank you! Well I made it so far I’ve been able to drive out in the field. Couple ducks on the water but it looks like most of them are somewhere else right now which is a great thing. I’m gonna probably catch some sleep now for a little bit. My wife is going to bring the kids out in about five hours.

Date: 24 Sep 2022

Time: Morning time

Location: ND

Cloud Cover: yes but we did have to look into the sun for about 15 minutes

Wind Direction and Velocity: well when I first started setting up it was about 10 mph out of the west. It was only supposed to increase and change to the west northwest however as things go it started coming out of the south east and was blowing in our face. Did that for about 20 and then it switched to the way it was supposed to come from and really started blowing at about 18 mph

Temperature: When I got to the field it was 50° and when I left the field it was 66°

Moon phase: Maybe a sliver

Special Notes: It was our regular season opener. Even though there was a couple thousand birds using the pothole I had very low expectations! Also it very much sucks being colorblind!

Waterfowl Activity: Hundreds and hundreds of Greenwing teal and a couple hundred pintails. Very few mallards or gadwall. Also saw a handful of widgeon.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Birds were acting like it was late season. Did not respond to the call but I’m sure you southern boys would get a good chuckle out of my calling skills. Since moving to North Dakota my calling abilities have really gone down into the toilet.

Hunters: Vinny Quack and I. Big D Dominic P was supposed to come however he woke up puking and instead of sucking it up he pussied out and went back to bed! In hindsight I wish I would’ve just stayed in bed. Not really it was a fun morning just a little frustrating.

Guns: We all shoot Winchester SX4

Malfunctions: with the exception of the ducks everything worked like it should have

Dog(s): Reaper Who was acting like it was his first hunt. He did not know what the back command was, didn’t stay all the time, wouldn’t come back when called, you name it he was doing it wrongly. That being said he once again demonstrated that he has an outstanding nose and a lot of drive to find the birds when he smells them. Even if sometimes he walks slow coming back to you, would think he’s walking backwards with the bird.

Special Equipment: just goose and duck decoys. Was supposed to have lots of wind so I told my wife not to bring my duck butts that make ripples. It was windy when I was setting up but of course when it was legal shoot in time the wind died and the water was like glass. I did not use any spinners. Winners don’t you spinners!

Curses: I don’t believe in curses!

Kudos: To the guys that I beat to the field. They did not try to downwind us. They just went to another spot and ended up doing better on geese than us. I taught the one kid how to hunt, he shot his first ducks and geese with me. That’s a whole different story though.

Birds By Species: Two dirty greenheads, two Greenwing teal, one gadwall and one Pintail. Definitely should’ve shot a couple more mallards but our shooting was like crap. Also if we wanted to we definitely could’ve been done in about 15 minutes if we would’ve just shot Greenwing teal. Like I mentioned above it seems like it was flock after flock after flock of pintails. It was pretty frustrating even though it’s good to see them. I usually save low number birds meaning birds that you can only shoot a couple of till the end. Just my preference or rule but I have been known to break that rule. My daughter broke it today as she shot the pintail.

Not a bad start! So from the sound of it your season doesn’t usually start with a bang? Takes a few weeks for things to get going?
