It was a family get together with a BIL that was working in the area, and had I done my homework, I would've taken a light and gig along. Listened to them all week long, a saw lot of them all over.
Old timers here talked about using a cane pole, fishing line with a small bream hook, and a little piece of red cloth to dangle in front of them when shining a light. Said they would attack it, but can't say I've taken the time to try. Any of you ever heard of such?

It works even during the day, but we used crickets. Get the wind in your face and place the cricket as close to their front as possible and they grab it. We used to snatch them to land behind us and watch a 14 year young boy off to the chase.
Never had lots of them though, but when the bream weren't biting...

No cork and no sinker. #6 aberdeen hook. A stiffer hook may have worked better, though.

Told the young man, when it was time, to quit playing with his food.
All in a day's work.

Rick mentioned doing it during the day as well, and imagine cane poling crickets for frogs would be a hoot!!!!!

Date: 11/19/2022

Cloud Cover: Low overcast

Wind Direction and Velocity: NNW 10 to 15

Waterfowl Activity: Next to nothing

Waterfowl Responsiveness: N/A

Hunters: ME and Bill

Birds By Species: DNS

Rain had ended just short a of LST (6:10 AM) so we made our way out to the blind. We we're monitoring the radar and left the blind just before 8:00 AM so we didn't have to get wet and cold for nothing. The sky was empty and we didn't hear much shooting. Those we met and spoke to later that were waterlogged didn't have much to show for their efforts. It rained well into the evening.

Date: 11/20/2022

Cloud Cover: Overcast to clearing later in the morning

Wind Direction and Velocity: NNW 10 to 15 to higher NE later in the morning with the clearing skies

Waterfowl Activity: More than yesterday

Waterfowl Responsiveness: They just showed up low level

Hunters: ME and Bill

Birds By Species: 7 GW

First time I've seen high big duck flights from the north. Saw a few flocks of specs and snows trafficking east to the grit pile at the refuge. First time I've seen big groups of ducks lifting off of the big open water to our west. All groups would lift and head east towards us but had another place in mind. We could have finished with a two-man limit if my partner would've fired his weapon. One instance was a large flock of GW that I let pass left to right to his side. I took the last bird in the flock, and it was all I could get to without ringing his bell. I may have been a bit strong with my words afterwards out of frustration. I will start at the head of the flock from now on.

"Go, ahead...go ahead... Somebody please shoot." vs "How'd that work out for ya?" I'll take the former most every time. At least got to see them "right there".

Damn serious offenses
I applaud your patience Rick, and can only imagine the frustration of those moments.
Kinda like getting blue balls when you were young, lots of build up to the moment that never comes :o

Huh?
This one is confusing unless you're an actual word butcher. It IS impressive that someone actually knows and understands the usage of latter and former.
I read this twice and will never quite get it fixed firmly into my brain.
If I shot a mallard then a pintail and want to discuss the latter...which duck is it?
I'm trying to learn this and it's 7th grade English.

Why not you tell me what sex it was based on the odor.
I'll reserve revealing the answer to test your knowledge.
Ok?

It was a wigeon I took a picture.
Cute little blue bill..I thought I was shooting a wood duck it was lst in the woods. Kind of dark still at 6:15.
Picked it up and "hey this ain't a wood duck".
Nobody is perfect and I'm not even trying.
I think maybe it was a tranny duck in the process of transitioning.

Cloud Cover: Low overcast with light mist

Wind Direction and Velocity: NNW 10 to 15

Waterfowl Activity: Saw a lot of gadwall and teal today.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Teal good on some but gadwall just teased us.

Hunters: Me and Blake

Birds By Species: 5 GW -1 scaup (Blake couldn't resist)

We didn't see much of anything for the first hour and a half to two hours after LST. After that, and until we left at 10:30 there was a steady flow of gadwall, teal and some others coming from the south. Several flocks of gadwall I called at would have a couple break immediately and turn towards us to only climb and rejoin the flock shortly afterwards. Blinds on the adjacent east property must have 10 people in a blind and shot at least a case of shells this morning, which screwed on several approaching flocks. We went back out to check or crab traps later and there were still many flocks of ducks crisscrossing the marsh.

Beautiful clean crabs.

Cloud Cover: low overcast, to low overcast and fog/mist, to clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: SE strong turning SW even stronger within an hour

Waterfowl Activity: Slow and low

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Good. Came to the call.

Hunters: Me, Blake and Avery

Birds By Species: 3 Gadwall 3 spoonbill 1 snow goose

Heavy Rain until noon put 2 inches of water in the screen porch. The campground looked like a lake. We headed to the blind around noon after the rain quit and hunted until 3:00. Afternoons is something we don't normally do and was different. We quit early to go to Mass in Pecan Island. We had a flock of 7 or 8 gadwall that we both screwed up on and took nothing. My first shot had one falling that eventually flew off and the next two were at the sky in rapid succession. Blake shot twice and missed.

Toady was special. It is my birthday, my dad passed away 31 years ago today while I was in the duck blind just miles from here with a lease partners customer and son. It was a very good hunt that I remember well. On top of that My 2nd granddaughter was born in 2016 on this day and I was here in this same marsh, so I thought it fitting that we spend the weekend together in the blind.

Avery and I with the afternoon's birds. Ellie is still doing her thing, just way slower than she used to.

Avery and I in the Blind. She did a good job of spotting ducks yesterday and letting us know. She hid well.... My heart is full.

That's some good stuff, DC. And mass in Pecan Island sounds right up my alley as well. The parish of the little bitty church in St. Bernard near Shell Beach camp was founded in something like the late 1700's, it's a great reset for me to attend there.
