Here's a little time capsule

Postby Ricky Spanish » Thu Feb 09, 2023 7:56 am

Picked up this book in the 90s at a Menards store.
The old school stuff in it is kind if neat to look at.
I used it as a "how to" and really its not that good for that.
The old pictures of clothing and stuff is cool I think.

It's crazy how much my gear resembles this.
No o/u...no federal ammo however.

This...
Counterintuitive but I've tried that backwards and front ways too.
Here it works better if you hide in front of the brush pile.
Saw a deer hunting video where it worked on deer.
Tried it on shoreline ducks and it works.
Try it?

Quite a few of the Illinois public venues allow this sort of thing shown above.
That looks a lot like where I started out as a kid.
If I knew what I know now I'd have hauled in t-stakes and a driver and a roll of chicken wire, zip ties, loppers and a saw. It's allowed in some areas. Not in others.
Example: rend lake subimpoundments. No! They'll ticket you for even having loppers.
Clinton Lake? No. Bring your own brush pile.

Now this is where I screwed up for years.
"Tips n tails" and calling on the corners?
I had to be shown by guides what the hell it means. It took me several guides to get in the right place.
This chart helps but it's not a strict guide.
I thought it was.
Weird way to draw out duck calling.

I'd get em circling tight and get so excited but had no clue what next. They'd circle 3 times and split.
Sound familiar?

I didn't know about letting them get a ways down wind before turning them. Frustrating but my early days were exactly that because I had no clue on how to finish ducks or when to not call.
Grrr. It was hard.
It got easy then hard again.

This book ain't so old that they didn't have GPS but they were slow as hell and hated trees.

Hmm. A volochoke explained.
It's a duck call with "choke tubes" to adjust volume.
I'm guessing I'd call it a variable bore call.

Have never seen anything like it.
