Homemade E caller

Postby Olly » Thu Apr 11, 2013 12:32 pm

I've been wanting to do this project for a long time and can't believe I haven't before now with how easy and cheap it was. I have a about $35.00 into this very basic caller.

Parts List

Radio Shack #227-1008 Mini Amp
Radio Shack #400-1440 4"x6" Power horn.
Radio Shack #420-2420 cable, 6' long with 1/8" male mono plugs at each end.
Radio Shack #420-2434 cable, 6' long with 1/8" male plug on one end and stripped at the other end.
Ammo can

Here's a link to some free MP3's I've found on the internet and decided to host them here so they'd always be available. Right click and "save as" to download.

First thing is to mount the horn to the ammo can. I mounted it on the side of the can. At this step I've also ran the horn cable into the can.

Next we need to solder the horn cable to the 1/8" audio cable you bought (Radio Shack #420-2434) I also used heat shrink here to keep the +/- of the cables apart and to provide weather proofing.

Time to put the amp in the can. I just velcroed it in there so it'd be easy to remove to replace the 9V battery. The MP3 player will also be valcroed in there, this picture really shows how simple this caller is.

All that's left to so is add a camo paint job. I'll be testing the caller this weekend and will post back how well it worked, so far when I tested it with some music it was loud enough to get my boss out of his office to see what was going on

Maybe I missed this part, but how does the MP3 attach to the input for the amp- does the amp come with a headphone jack sort of plug? I'm all about this. I've wanted one for fox and to try coyotes as well, but would never spend $300 on something like that.

Yup,the amp has two 1/8" female audio plugs. One for the speaker (the horn I used) and one as an input from whatever source you choose to use.

In the 2nd to last photo you can see the black audio cable is the one I soldered to the horn and the white one is a audio cable with two male 1/8" jacks on it. One side goes into the amp and the other into your source. I found the cable laying around but radio shack sells them. Radio Shack #420-2420.

I'm doing this. Although it's going to pain me to give up one of my ammo cans. May just have to bite the bullet and buy another one.

I could have used one of the smaller ammo cans but this is one that was in the trash so I re-purposed it. I have more ammo cans then I need anyway.

I did one back in 2006. Sold it to a guy who wanted it.

It looks like you are on track!

I currently use a FoxPro Spitfire.

Yea I could never spend that kinda cash on something I won't use often. I'm pretty happy with $35 for this caller.

I almost have a boner thinking about how cheap it's going to be.

I've added a link to the main post of free MP3's I've found around the internet to be used with your Homemade E Caller.

I made a home made snow goose caller for about $150, that puts a $1000 caller to shame. Works for dogs, but is a little overkill.

Nice, I thought about putting the speaker inside the ammo can but it wouldn't fit. Buying another box would have blown my budget of "cheap as can be"

He took a motor from a broken toy, epoxied on about an inch and a half diameter gear from something else with a hole drilled in it, used a coat hanger through a hole in the top of the can into the hole in the gear. You have to make sure it's in the gear when you close the top and then flip the second switch. In that pic it's not in the gear but laying down, I'll have him post up a pic if the inside, pretty sure it's all the same parts as Ollie's
