Work boot question

Postby Goldfish » Tue Apr 23, 2013 4:46 pm

So, granted, my work boots are near 9 years old and I've just started to wear them, but I've wore thru the toe on the right boot already. We can't oil our boots because you can't have any oil get into the tanks. Will some work better for me than others, or is there something I should look for so that I'm not burning thru the leather there so fast? Hell, should I just put duct tape on it? I just started this job last week, and was in training for the 8 weeks before that but most the carnage came on the job, not training.

I've used something similar to these with good results, they just glue on.

If its already worn through you can try shoe goo.

Pony up for some Redwings.

American made, and they last forever. I have had my current pair for more than 2 years, and only have a few cuts in the toes, and it's not from a lack of trying. They are made with a high quality leather.

Not cheap, but well worth the investment if you wear work boots for a living...

All day I'm kneeling in a steel tube pretty much, wire feed welding two tubes together, so the tips have basically been sanded.

They make a "cap" (for lack of a better word) that some pitchers put on the toes of their shoes to prevent excess wear-maybe you could do that

Redwing makes something similar. You "paint" it on the toe of the boot for extra protection. I'll try to find a link in a few.

I think this is where something clever about tapatalk should go.

Boots still have a lot of life in them as long as the foreman isn't bitching. It will just wear around that spot but mine have never spread past the steel toe.

That is more or less what this is:

Every time I go into the store, they recommend it to me. I don't feel that I have a need for it, but it looks like you do.

Piss on the leather toes of your boots. When it dries, the uric acid crystallizes, and makes almost a "natural" version of acrylic.

You may have to do this twice. Let them dry in between.

Find a boot and shoe repair place and have them put a leather cap on the toes of the boot. It shouldn't be very expensive.

Never tried the cap, but it looks like it would work. A shoe shop should be able to put an extra layer of leather on the toe or something similar. Raw steel is hard on everything.

Cheaper is better. I think I've got some spray on bed liner left over from projects that I could try if you guys are serious about people using it on their boots.

Assa, can't have any contaminants on the boots, so the uric acid is a no go. Neither would be the ammonia. Sorry.

What kind of boots are the seasoned vets wearing? How long are they getting out of them?

don't ask them. That would be foolish. You always ask guys off the Internet first
