Small engine help

Guys, I could use a little help with the ice auger. There is a wind vane which connects to the throttle plate. The wind vane keeps the throttle plate closed at idle and rotates out of the way when the gas is applied.

Does the throttle plate need to be slightly open when the wind vane is in the "closed" position? As I have it right now, the throttle is as closed as it can go when the wind vane is in the closed position. It doesn't really want to idle: it will for a few seconds if I play with the choke, but it is not idling at a high enough speed to stay running. Therefore, I am guessing that I need to have the throttle plate slightly open when the wind vane is in the closed position. Anyone know small engines?

Not sure if I completely understand what your saying, but you do need to have the throttle slightly open to idle when you aren't touching anything.

Do you guys honestly think I would come here for advice without first pissing on it? It worked for a little bit, but I'm gonna need a steady stream to keep it going and I have a pretty small bladder. Gonna have to try something else I'm afraid.

I'm assuming the wind vane is the throttle butterfly?

If that's the case, it should be open ever so slightly. There should be a screw to adjust where it sits at idle. On my dads auger it was on the top and literally just stopped how far back the lever outside the carb moved.

Also it could be a vacuum leak between the carb and motor.

Brand new carb. I paid to have it fixed locally because I didn't want to deal with it. It did not get fixed, the guy made it run but it only runs at speeds of "wide open" and "raped ape." I really don't want it over-rev and explode.

Correct. The guy at the shop took it off "because it ran better without it." We clearly have different ideas of what running better is.

I had to replace the wind vane once before and I remember it being really easy. Now I can't figure out the proper position of it which is leading me to believe I am missing a crucial part.

Well, I've got it semi-running right now. I think I might be able to get this figured out yet. It'd be easier if I knew exactly what the carb was so I know where the adjustment screws are.

Could be the gasket

This is what I was talking about when I said vacuum leak.


If you can get it to run long enough to spray starting fluid on the carb around the gasket, it should rev up if its a vacuum leak. It doesn't take much for it to run like shit.
