Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

Are you going to turn it into a UDS smoker, or will you perhaps explore boat painting in the boat section of the forums?

Already got my thermometer, and a bottle opener.

I've got the bottle opener but i won't install it until I figure out my paint scheme. I did my fire box the cheap way go back and look at the pics a few pages back. Used an old grill grate and some rabbit cage wire. The only reason I haven't ordered the bbq guru yet is because a.) last time I didn't get to finish my cook on my smoker. The weather made me move it to the oven. And
B.) because its almost like cheating. The damn thing has a fan and computer to maintain temps.I feel like a real man (or "alpha" on this site) sits with his smoker for the entire ten hours and drinks beer while adjusting the dampers.

If you get a new thermometer, I recommend one of the big ones like TK linked to. Mine was $8, and worth every penny. It has a blue section and a red section, the needle is wide, and the face is big. I can glance out the door and see clearly what the temp is, saving me a lot of trips back and forth to the smoker. It's a very nice thermometer.

That is a HUGE plus to me. I love that I can see if the temp is right right from the deck. Makes it easier to relax.

Mine are at 4" and 8" from the top, but I'd say it depends more on the size of what you plan on cooking.

I measured up 26 inches from the bottom. I plan to add another rack right at the top once I find a dome lid.
assa- does that thermometer have to be calibrated?

......I don't know. Never thought about it before now. Thanks a lot, Flint.

I just get it to about 215 (right on the border of blue and red), and that's done the trick for me, for ribs, chicken, salmon, and groundhog. I just vary the time, rather than the temp, although I don't know if this is "proper" or not.
