Postby GadwallGetter530 » Tue Jul 02, 2013 5:09 am

So, Sunday night The water heater at the house just took a dump. I'll be tearing into that this morning when I get home from work. See if It can be fix with out having to buy a whole new unit. Oh and the fuckin Icing on the cake is that my wife just texted me. The FUCKIN A.C unit is on the fritz. Apparently its not holding temp, and their is water leaking some where. FML!!!! Why do I think this is goin to cost me big time. :x Both are reasonably new, I must have pissed off the utility Gods some how. Today is goin to suck big time. :?

Your AC froze up. Clean it and install new filters.

AC...turn it off and change the filter. The coil froze up and that is where the water is coming from. (Very good chance)
Water heater...get your tools and start a thread when you get home.
Help is at your fingertips.

Only two tools needed, Philips screwdriver and a heater element wrench, the one made from galvanized tube, looks cheap, but will save a lot of headache when you round off the element head with pipe wrenches or other devices.

Good luck gad!

Make sure to turn off the electric and water to the HWH and drain before replacing the heating element. I have a buddy that can tell you what happens if you do not do this.

110 and no AC, OMG...
Atleast you have the option of a cold shower to cool off.

You guys want to send me some blankeys? You won't be needing them. Ever.

If there is a severe lack of air flow at the register then you can confirm that its froze up. Freeze is most commonly caused by the dirty air filter, as said earlier, but can also be lack of air flow from other reasons - circ blower failure, low refrigerant charge. Also setting the stat below about 69* can cause freeze up.
If you are not froze up and getting water leakage it could be a blocked/broken condensate drain.
I'll try to answer any questions if you need it.

Sadly most of my service calls were dirty filters that failed and then the coils got dirty too.
First thing I always check is the Acoil. If its not frozen, I start checking other things.
Good filter maintenance is critical.

A.C Is kinda figured out. I think its a clogged filter. Like ya'll have said. The Water heater, I'm thinkin its the thermal coupler.

Yup, It stays on for about an hour then it craps out. Just enough time to heat the water enough for the wife to shower. With the 100 degree weather I really dont care right now. Colder the shower the better. But I'll be picking up the part in the morning.

That or clean it up with a scotch brite pad. I've made some last a year + by just cleaning them up.

Sometimes no amount of cleaning will help though. The only reason I brought it up is because you said it will run for an hour before it shuts off.

Thermacouples are just two different kinds of metal that when heated, bend one way due to different expansion of the metals. If it's operating for an hour and shutting off, I'd say that it's working properly. Usually if they fail, they stop bending and holding the valve open to keep the gas feeding. The few times that has been an issue for me, when the thermocouple failed, you had to hold the button down and when you'd let go, the thermocouple had never bent and the gas shut off. I'm an electrician who happens to work at a pressure vessel plant.. we make fancy water heaters. If the water is heating up to temp and then cutting off, I'd check the control valve/thermostat. It's probably reaching the upper limits, shorting out and shutting off the gas. That's what sets the top temp of the tank and stops it from becoming a rocket shooting out of your roof. Drain the tanks, disconnect the wires, unscrew it, tape and replace.

Sorry don it uses electricity created by the pilot

" When used as a control device in a gas appliance, the thermocouple is mounted so that its measuring junction is heated by a pilot light. The electric current generated is sent through an electromagnet. As long as the current flows, the electromagnet holds open a valve that allows gas to reach the appliance. If the pilot light goes out, the measuring junction cools off, no current flows, and the electromagnet releases the valve, shutting off the gas."
