Scouting time

Sam and I have been eyeballing this field that floods late season. It's located behind a farm pond we hunt. Very secluded, surrounded by thick trees and bordered by the river. Late season the birds quit using the pond when it's levels rise and they hit up this little secluded flooded field. Hard to explain but we weren't sure how to access it easily until today. We found a trail through the trees the rancher's cattle have made. Took us right to the field. Hopefully it'll pay off. Got a couple more spots I've been eyeballing on google earth along the river. Gonna check them out soon

I know Olly's been scouting. Anyone else exploring new spots?

that looks like a nice place for me to build a little cabin and a big green house you got some pretty country in you part of the world!!
right now im only scouting the golf course near my office. we will be in the fields in a couple,three weeks chopping silage. setting up for dove and early goose. then it boom boom boom,shit, reload,boom boom boom

Nice red, yes I have. Cleared out a woody hole last weekend. Made a real nice landing zone with a machete and pulling out huge tussocks of a type of shrub, which was easy cuz its all anchored in mucky loose soil.

nice. Sam brought his machete just in case. If this plays pans out, we'll be standing in the tree line and I'll feel like some Arkansas hillbilly hunting timber

That sounds like tits. this hole is on state land and you got to pay the price with hard work to get away from anyone. funny sam was already in waders in this weather. A form of training? We were in sneaks and its gunna be, just like every year a real heart stopping cough fest with waders on dragging all the decoys im sure.

Can understand Sam's desire to get ducky and have to admire the gumption to be tramping around in waders this early. Wears me out thinking about it. Hope that spot rewards him.

We've a couple new leases I probably should be checking out, but the big cheese has a penchant for subletting pieces I'd like to keep, so I ain't looking 'til it's more certain there's good reason.

Couldn't help but make a pass this morning though some rice stubbles that are being flooded. Knew it's still too soon for teal to take them. Just couldn't not take a peek.

Gonna start looking for some early goose spots in the next week or so. Then I want to find a calm day and explore some new shorelines along the bay in my boat that I couldn't walk to before.

We love to hunt points on calm days and sheltered coves on windy days.

ha! Yea his feet fit the boots but the rest is alittle big. He likes that their lightweight. Outgrew his old ones

I would always buy jr's two sizes to big and let him grow into them, last year he got breathables with the neoprene sock and cheap goodwill second hand store boots, nice way to go on the cheap

if they'll hold up, sam'll wear these at least two years. All his other gear is new and two sizes too big. I do the same thing

I have beem putting off scouting for geese cuz I hunted the same lake for many years. Aint saying which one but there's a place called "the grassy flat" that I will be camping on a day or two before goose season just so I can get my five. I know this sounds crazy but yeah, people CAMP in boats to reserve a spot for opening day. It was not my fucking idea. Just going with the flow because I want to kill blackfeet again. Haven't done it in several years, Been murdering specks n snows down south. I WANT THEM HONKERS BAD!

My scouting right now is just trying to get the lay of the land. When I get back from NJ and around Nov. Is when I will start looking for birds.

I think I'm going to go out tomorrow morning while its still fairly decent out and check on some new ponds I found. Also check on some marshes to see if they are holding water.

By being a nomad I follow the migration and get a very long season.

I can start hunting waterfowl in Sept and go all the way into mid to late March, so yes the season can get long if I choose.

They haven't released the season dates here in AL yet but last year regular duck was even of Nov- end of Jan.

Get it? That looks like a good one.
The sunny part...ducks have a much harder time spotting hunters on sunny days. Decoys show up better too.
Hide in shadows on leeward side of that hole. Put a smack down on the puddle ducks.
They want that green floaty stuff. Its called duckweed.

I think I just found my early season spot. It's perfect for me since I don't have a dog and I can walk anywhere in here. There had to be 100 woodies on it this morning. Still need to sit here a few more times but it looks real promising.

Got a spot just like that up at my cabin. Beavers made it late last fall. Haven't checked it out this summer yet, but if it has water I'd bet it has a few woodies on it.
