My confession to ASSA.

Postby grizz18 » Fri Aug 09, 2013 7:11 pm

Yesterday was beautiful. I got off work at 8 am, and headed straight for the water. Dropped the boat in the water, with perfect temps, no winds and the perfect rising tide. Headed to catch bait, loaded up in 3 casts with the prettiest bait of the year...then is happened.

Out of no where the boat started struggling. I realized the bulb wasn't primed and couldn't get it primed. I checked all the connections and there they were all good. There was one hatch I couldn't get to, the hatch was locked on and the only way I could get to it was by unscrewing all the screws...no screw driver. Managed to get them all off with a knife, but all the connection on top of the tank were good.

I ended up finding a hose that ran from the water separator to the bulb was twisted, when I got it undone the bulb got tight. Problem solved....for 500 yrds. Same issue happened again, this time..no dice. Ended up getting towed back to the ramp. Took the boat to the mechanic, and he checked everything I did plus some. He ended up taking the top off the tank and checkin the pick up line....it was good.

THEN it happened. He said "get me that dipstick". dropped it in the tank and laughed...he said "Your problem is you have ZERO gas!!!"

Moral of story. NEVER NEVER TRUST A MARINE FUEL GAUGE.

Assa I will never make fun of you again.

That sucks!
Last time I ran out of gas I walked the boat back to the launch only to have jehler show me the second full tank.

Haha, my boat has a couple little cubbie holes. One is dry storage up in the bow and another behind that. I stash a tiny one-gallon plastic can up in the second. Has saved me from my drunken self a couple times. My little boat will go a long, long way on a gallon.
I've heard that it's incredibly stupid to fuck around with a crazy man's head.

I always put my gas tank on a slight angle with the pickup on the uphill side. So if I run out I can turn the tank around and have about a half gallon of gas left yet.

I just make sure my gas tank is full before I leave the ramp.

I did feel stupid after taking it to the mechanic, but after doing all the tests I knew... I didn't know what else to do. Especially since all along my fuel gauge had actually been working...

I didn't go in the ocean, and if I do I don't go 5+ miles out... hell I run 20 miles inshore to fishing spots
