we need to clarify. with a deep dutch you can probably let it go longer, with a bread oven, you run the risk of burning the cake mix/biscuits on top if you let it go too long.

Used pie crust and canned pie filling. Cheating but its camping, right?

actually i'm working on catching a viable sourdough starter right now, i'm on day three and it seems to have cultured quite well, i had to toss half the mix this morning or risk it taking over my counter when i fed it again.

but yeah, the cake mix is kind of cheating, but hey, there are no set in stone rules either.

Harbor Freight has an 8-qt dutch oven for $20. Maybe I will see what China has to offer.

When the room is an hour from the boat launch and I can camp at the boat launch...real moneysaver. Does room service deliver to The Lower Vallier?

I think all of my cast iron is Chinaman made. I have no problem with it- cast iron is cast iron.

You can BAKE biscuits with fire if you have a dutch oven. . Cook pizza, campfire..what dont you get?
Howvit works...
If you want to bake brownies, put batter in a round cake pan.
You put three rocks in the bottom of the oven. Spacers to lift pan off bottom. Put pan on top of the rocks.
Put lid on and bury the oven in coals from a wood fire.
Get it now?

I like one for cooking in the oven. Makes nice roast- brown it in a little oil, with a couple onions on a burner, then add water and veggies and put in the oven. Good stuff.

Oh yeah. Duck gumbo in a dutch oven is good too. You kinda need cast iron to do things right.

Nope. Must be cause I can't relate. No experience or maybe I just don't appreciate that style of cooking.

What I've been using as a dutch oven is really just a really deep cast iron frying pan with a lid. I love that thing for camping. I can use it to make bacon and eggs in the morning, fry up some fish, fries and onion rings for lunch bake cornbread to go along with dinner. I might have to step it up next time and try that easy ass peach cobler to impress the ladies.
Tell your mom I said hi.

found a pic of the first bread loaf
