Just planned out...

Postby Redbeard » Sun Sep 01, 2013 7:36 pm

...opening week...tentatively. Obviously bored, but seeing all the mallards and geese at my training spots lately has made the itch that much worse. Got the first 10 days of the season off.

Assuming things fall where I think they will, we'll be hunting a different spot each of the first five or six days. I enjoy this part of the preseason every year; figuring out where I'll be the first day and prioritizing each day after

Anyone else have tentative plans made? Obviously too early for anything to be set in stone

Stil a ways out for having birds around to even think about plans. Probably hit a few close spots until we get a good number down.

No such thing as locals here during the summer. Saw a few groups of ruddies at the lake last week but that's it. Coast holds some but not my area. Like living in am oven, can never believe the temps you post from out your way.

I usually take the first week off to hunt, have since '05, but this year I think I'll go back to work for Tuesday and Wednesday. Make it 2 long weekends and save a couple vacation days for later.

I gotta hit it as hard as I can the first two weeks, cause come Nov it's slows down purty good. Although this year, I'll probably switch gears all of Nov and focus mostly on brant

I have the teal opener pretty well lined out. Driving back to Texas to hunt opening weekend. Best thing about teal season is its always a gamble. They will either be there or they won't, but it will be a blast either way.

I hunt the river which is just steps outside of Austin and plenty of people live near it in stretches. They don't have a clue about legalities other than they don't like it. Cops got tired of being called out and started cracking down on them for calling. That part of river has been annexed now and pushed is further down river.

I'll be somewhere out on the sagnasty bay. Gonna start scouting to get an idea on where I want to be. I'll be out there all week long hopefully, then it's off to deer camp the next Friday for the archery opener.

I'll probably be hunting duck opener alone this year too.

No buddies to hunt with or is this hunting alone thing on the opener soup for the soul? If it is, I get it. I hunt solo plenty during the season when Sam's in school

I hunt alone a lot because I've only met a handful of guys worth hunting with.

Looking forward to the opening weekend reunion in our marsh. Thirty, or forty(?), years ago, a successful area car dealer started bringing a group of friends to the marsh my morning blind is in for the opening weekend, and we inherited their tradition when we took over the marsh seven seasons ago. The original host and all but one of his buddies have passed or become too infirm for the trip , but his sons have maintained their reunion hunt and added their own friends and sons as the original crew thinned. Hoping to get to hunt the last of the old guard, Jim, who's now entering his 80s. He's a hoot.

I've a firm rule, for the sake of the dog's head and hearing, that no one is to shoot to the right of my whirligig. Period. And on the 2009 opener, Jim swung on a hard crossing teal and rocked the spinner:
Image

Before either his partner or I could say a word, Jim boomed, "You'll note I did not shoot to the right of the Robo."

Then he proceeded to tell on himself at the boat house, so his partner couldn't lord it over him. But before the next morning's hunt his hosts held a surprise pre-hunt ceremony and presented him with a well shot up spinner rigged to be hung on a wall. Which I'm told he did:
Image

Great folks.

Thinking on it, two others of the original crew, at least one of which I know has passed, still hold the record for most decoys shot in a morning. They just weren't in the game on flying birds, so I started landing them and cutting the old gentlemen loose on them on the pond. Picked up seven sinkers after dropping them off at the boathouse that morning and another six the next morning. Would gladly do it again this year if only they were able.
