I'm used one before and it's not at easy to get right. It's hard to get long burst like that.

Sent from my phone.

I pretty much thought that, and don't have a press, anyway. but it was worth a shot.

I can, however, load black powder into metallic cartridges, as long as they're the size of a coffee can or larger. Gonna try to split some wood with some this weekend, just for grins.

Be careful. BP is very unstable compared to smokeless powder.

I'm trying to take it to the next level by using a bag of horse manure for the potassium nitrate. I have a burlap sack about halfway full right now. It has to be fresh, and that's the problem, since by the time I get to it it's been sitting in the sun. but if you can get it in the bag fresh, it will be fine to use later. You fill the bag up with fresh manure (this can take a few weeks, just so long as it's fresh when you put it in), then hang the bag from a limb where the sun will hit it, and pour some water in the top. When it dries, it will form crystals on the outside of the burlap, and that is the "pure" potassium nitrate. I'm sure I'll have to fiddle with the percentages, but it would be cool if I could get it to go bang, using nothing more than horse manure and homemade charcoal.

Weren't the original cartridges filled with black powder? It is a lot lower pressure than modern smokeless right?

Yup, the .45-70 (and .45-80, 90, 100, 110, 120) literally got their name from being a .45 caliber projectile with 70 grains of blackpowder.
