Nice little morning shoot

Postby Redbeard » Sat Nov 09, 2013 4:35 pm

Set up in this semi hidden marsh that I don't think gets hunted often, cause of the 1/2 mile paddle. 5 minutes to shoot time mallards and teal were swarming us. Several landed in the decoys, but took off just before LST.

Regardless, over the next 3 hours we were able to scratch 18 birds that came in here and there. Had we stayed all day I'm certain we coulda shot quite a few more. But our partners for the day had to be home early for a funeral.

The mallards were wary all morning. We only took 5. They came in in groups of 10-15 and would work for several minutes before boogying. The mallards we did shoot came in as singles or pairs.

The teal saved the day and provided most of the action, with a sprig, gadwall and widgeon mixed in.

Charlie did well today pulling out 5-6 birds that dropped deep into the tules.

I was pleasantly surprised. Pulling in I kept telling myself "be grateful if we shoot 5 or 6."

Good hunt, good story. I liked the low expectation part. Its best to aim high, expect low, and celebrate any success. Great job Red.
