First guided trip.

Postby RonE » Mon Nov 18, 2013 3:35 pm

Took clients out duck hunting for the first time today. Certainly different than when you are going with friends. It was so foggy that we didn't leave the dock until after legal shoot time. I don't know why but my boat ran like crap and didn't have enough power to get up on plane so we stopped and used the boat blind about a mile short of where I planned on hunting. Still foggy when I was putting out the decoys but about 30 red heads try to land in the decoys....I thought a couple were going to hit me. The clients weren't loaded and asked if those were ducks and if so, how did they get there. Yep, M R ducks M R, they flew in and you didn't see them because of the fog. Finally got the decoys out, got back in the boat and here they come trying to land in the decoys.......9 shots later, damn! we got one.......The dog retrieved it and we were off to a shaky but honest start. Time for the first beer. We didn't set the world on fire but had a great time and ended up with 8 red heads and a couple of pintails. The three clients booked another trip for later in the season. One of the guys girlfriend was a beauty and she could shoot as good as the guys. We should have had 4-6 pintails but, alas, we weren't completely on top of our game. The dog worked and handled great, never broke, never cried and never shook inside the boat. Think I'm going to like this guiding hunts.

To top everything off, while I was putting the dog away and getting out of my waders, one of the clients started cleaning the ducks and had all but two cleaned before I got to help. After we packed the duck breasts it was time for my first beer of the day. God is great, beer is good and duck hunting is fun.

might want to be careful about the beer. not sure but the state may be able to revoke your guiding license if anything were to happen under the influence.

Yes, first time I have gotten paid to guide duck hunters don't know why I didn't start sooner, the money is fantastic and it was fun.

I don't drink while I'm working or before driving. My clients however started while we were waiting for daylight so we could see in the fog. I was indeed worried that there would be no beer left when I was finished. In Texas, a state license is not required to guide duck hunting or any other hunting, to guide fishing, a state license is required though...I do have a Coast Guard License to operate an uninspected vessel which is all that is required.

Independently, all of the money is mine, if I screw up, it's on me and nobody but myself and perhaps my clients can bitch at me. Don't have to kiss anyone's ass to get a trip. Guiding for an outfitter or guide service is a pita, you become someone's ****** and can be thrown under the bus at any time. I have friends that work for different lodges and guide services, I don't want anything to do with that. I can plan my trips around my hunting buddies schedules (they work in the oil patch and are two weeks on and two weeks off). Got another trip this coming Thursday.

I have an OUPV too and I could actually drink while operating but don't. As long as your not legally intoxicated, your golden.

We cannot, however, provide alcohol in any conjunction with the business. One captain even got scolded for handing out some free drink cards from a local restaurant.

That is an attractive female.

Sounds like a hell of a time, Ron
