Crappie are a worthy adversary. They are trickier to catch up here, our lakes don't fill up with them like they do down south because in most cases they are cohabiting with perch species, who tend to fare a little better. Still plenty of opportunities. Just about the only pan fish that I care to catch. Perch are fine if they are large, bluegills are for little girls.

Sheeet. Even when I was chartering saltwater, bull bream and chinquapin (shellcrackers) were our family's frying fish of choice. And plenty of fun to catch. Crappie are limp wristed.

You've obviously never gotten into the 2+ pound weight class of crappie.

An honest 2 pounder up here is going on the wall.

Even a lot of the pictures I see of "2 pounders" from down south look like the same 14-15 inch fish that most of ours top out at. I've only seen one certifiable 2 pound crappie in my life, and it was over 17.

A couple years ago we caught a dozen or so 18"s. Biggest one I have ever seen was 19 1/2 and it was damn close to 3lbs. I have some pics of two hanging on a scale that were over 2lbs. All of those got eaten, but I have an 18 mounted that my cousin caught 20 years ago.

I think it's cute the way you're playing defender of the weak. Maybe start your own line of "Crappie Man" PJs with a little cape on the back.

Yall seriously have porcupines? I want some quills out of one. Been looking all over for them and cant ever find any. They make some of the best damn crappie corks on the face of the planet.

Too bad they're all hibernating or whatever.they do in the winter. You can't drive five minutes here in the summer without seeing a roadkilled porcupine

Do they have 1/4"-3/8" quills on them?

1/4" might be pushing it. I'll keep an eye out for some, there might still be a few big porkys around.

Truth

best way to catch crappie is with a flyrod, and i'd be willing to bet a lot of money on that.

How do you catch them on a flyrod through ice? Tell me now!

I watched a guy tear them up with a fly rod one time. He had a little white marabou jig and nothing else. He would catch 37 in the morning and 37 in the evening every day.

Beef catches them through the ice, I don't target trash fish or else I'd give it a go.

i use bead head leach patterns on them, has marabou tied in as a tail, usually with a crystal flash chenille as the body.
once i locate them, i'll pound the shit out of them. my buddy and i filled a canoe with 150 fish in a little over 3 hours once.

the fly works even better once the fish tear it up. i also tend to catch a lot of catfish just off the crappie groups. last year i caught a nice hen full of eggs that measured out at about 25 inches.

Hen? Never heard that before.

The flatheads run at the same time down here. I caught a 15 pounder once, biggest one during crappie season.
