People may think that blind sticks out llike a sore thumb, but it works awesome. I made one after seeing Reds. Modified the design a little for more hunters but it works like a dream. Ive killed everything behind it including your "smart" park ducks.
Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

Decent brant hunt today

Postby Redbeard » Fri Nov 22, 2013 2:47 pm

Well today didn't work out as planned. I screwed the pooch big time.

Bout 0745-0800, a big group of about 25 or so came off the ocean just north of us about 200 yards. They swung south and circled in front of us twice before dropping low and coming in to our decoys from the east. The sun by the way had just crested the mountains to the east and we were looking directly into it. Well, hunkered down behind the blind I was trying to eyeball the trailing birds cause the lead birds were in the sun. Long story short I didn't call the shot when I should have and they flared. We jumped up to shoot and I could see they were within 25-30 yards before flaring. We popped off a couple shots but dropped nothing. My guess was they were 40+ yards before the flared. Boy was I wrong.

The morning died down after that. We saw a few flocks but everything settled in the middle of the bay

We pulled the plug at about 1030

Do you call brant?
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams

Yea I got a cheap little Haydel's call that I'm not thrilled with. But they seem to respond fairly well to it. May try the bill Saunders' call next season. ChessyMan's son mouth calls em really well. Sam's gotten pretty good at it but hasn't had a chance to put his skills to use on real birds. Tomorrow will be his first brant hunt this season.
